Glas gow and I4verpool are all after supplies One of tha greatest sales of the season was confirmed today for foreign ship ment by the Northwestern Fruit 'lix Change but the officials of the exchange would not make public the exact details at ttits time. Red and Yellow nn1 are both In demand abroad at tills time, sales being shown far both BpHzenbergs and Yellow ixewiowns t very firm price. The atrenarth in th fnretarn demand for apples is a strona contrast to tho stuDoornness oi the American, situation. There Is scarcely anything doing in the American trade at this time: the market at most places being, stagnant. Practically no concessions in prices are btlng niaUn by apple Interests at-this ena, because they don t need to. i tia foreign situation la good enough at the moment to absorb all of the best offer ings, therefore It would be foolhardy for uhlppers to have their light dimmed ty tne inactivity oi tne general Amer lean trade. The excellent business that Is now ftassing In the foreign markets for Amer can apples," say a W. F. Gwin, general manager of the Northwestern Fruit Ex change, "is to some extent the result of i'ecirie (.'oast shippers having branch offices abroad.' We are maintaining a bin - office irr London and it has been one of our best investments because di rect representation has been found to be far superior to doing business at a dis tance. "By keeping foreign headauarters at London, the apple trade Is able to keep in touch with the entire continental trade and better values result. For In stance we today sold through London a carload of Newtowns at $1.90 f. o. b. here and sales of Spitaenbergs were made on the basis of $2.65 New Vark. WHEA T SITUATION IS RATHER QUIET IN THE PAGIFI NORTHWEST Wliile Prices Are Holding Rather Well There Is Less Business In dlcated Complete Stagnation Is Hhown for Coarse Grain. It developed this afternoon that the reported purchase or a big block of hops in the Yakima section at 25o yea terday was nothing but a fake. The lot reported sold yesterday at 2So was in reality made last Friday and the price was i!4o instead. , The real market for hops at this time Is really generally around 2323Vo a pouno. mere is consiaeraDle talk or a 24o deal, but none of these reports can be confirmed. The market has shown aulta a fair amount or activity during tne last 24 hours, but there is little general change in the situation outside of the fact that dealers are covering their November aaies. There is no chahae in the fnreio-n situation and the demand from abroad Is stagnant. A New York mail advice of late date says of the general situation in the hop trade: Bales Receipts" for week 12,920 Receipts since. Beot 1 ta sag Receipts same time last year.... 28,140 Exports to Europe for week 10,686 Exports from September 1...... 44,878 Imports for week ,. $74 Imports from September 1 1,086 Imports same time last year.... 2,943 Scarcely anythin dolnar In New York state. Practically all of the hops, have passed out of growers' hands, and such lots as are owned by dealers are gener. aly held against future needs. The few reported sales were at 3842c. The local situation has not changed much. Heavy shipments reported to England again this week, and It Is now expected that fully 60,000 bales will have cleared from this port before the close of this month. A fair trade is reported with brewers. but thev are rather cautious buyers be cause. of the fact that lower offers are made o 4hem by Pacific Coast dealers. The firmness and high prices quoted on state hops are due to' the small quantity of stock available. Pacifies are selling from 30c downward according to qual ity. February 12, 191, the California Pole & Piling company, of San Franclsctf,. and C. F. Walker, of Cottage Grove, complained against the differential, and the Interstate Commerce Commission ruled that the rates on poles and piling were excessive to the extent that they exceeded the rates on lumber between the same points. The railroad compa nies Justified thir rates on the grounds that water competition forced down the lumber rates, but showed that poles and piling could not be handled by com petitors over water routes. An appeal was taken by the railway companies to the ruling of the commis sion, emd a rehearing allowed, with the above result.
