men's compensation act which was con
tributed by the Oregon Civic league.
paragraph, as published Sunday, reads:

Mabel Boucher, the little snake charm.
er, who defied the police Saturday morn
ing with her reptiles, was In police
court this morning to answer to a charre
of defrauding' an Innkeeper. The man
agement of the Hoyt hotel, claims shs
removed her snakes and baggage with
out pay'ng 94 room rent, and In addition
thereto asks 120 damages to the room
on account of a fire.
The snake charmer contends that her
baggage was held in the room, and that
she would pay the rent bill when she se
cured her baggage. Judge Stevenson
asked Patrol Officer Inskeep to tnvestl-4

)MH DIES SUDDENLY
Archie V. Davig.
Archie V. Davis, northwest represen
tative of the Maxwell Motor company,
who came here In April, died suddenly
yesterday morning of heart disease. The
death, which ocourred about 8 o'clock,
came as a complete shock to his many
friends. Mr. Davis and his wife re
turned to their apartments In, the Mor
ton, King and Washington streets, late
Saturday night, and at 8. o'clock Sunday
morning Mr. Davis, complaining of a
pain near his heart aroused Mrs. Davis.
He died before assistance arrived.
Mr. Davis was one of the best known
automobile men on the Pacific coast.
Before coming here, he was sales man
ager of the Maxwell branch at Detroit,
Mich,, his home. He has figured In
many automobile races, and was one
of the winners of the Gild den tour-of
1913, with the Maxwell team. The tour
was from Detroit to New Orleans, and
waa won by the Maxwell team of three
cars Mr. Davis has made several nota
ble runs, among them being a trip from
Ban Francisco to Seattle -in the first
small Maxwell car sent to the Pacific
coast. He was also the first driver
over the new Columbia river highway
from Bridal Veil to a point one mile
west of Multnomah falls, the end of the
present construction work.
Mr. Davis, who was 91 years old.
married Miss Tillle Schneider of Detroit,
September 11,. 1909. The body will be
taken back to Detroit for Interment,
leaving Portland this evening at 7

No," the voters are urged to defeat
the compensation - act .at - tomorrow's
election and the statement is made 'that
under the act a man suffering total dis
ability would : receive only 925 per
month.
This statement Is untrue.
:. Under the provisions of the bill, pen
sions for permanent, disability range
from 80 to 85(1, per month, and further
more a pension goes to the widow or
children In case of the disabled worker's
death. , ' '
If a man sustains Injuries that result
In permanent disability, the law pro
vides for his support as follows: If
unmarried, 830 a month; If the-worker
have a wife or Invalid husband, but no
child, $36; and for each child under the
age of 10 years, the monthly payment
shall be Increased $6 until such-child
shall arrive at the. age of 1, but the
total monthly payment shall ' not ex
ceed $60.

more street Jewelers, was smashed, her
early today and 8190 worth of Jewelry
stolen. The robbery Is believed to have
been the work of tha same man who
smashed the window of the Macey Jew
elry company on Market street early
Saturday, escaping with jewelry worth
more than 11000.
