" An Interesting feature In tha charter 'market as far as sail tonnage is con- earned, haa teen brought to light in tha ' recent sale of the British 4ark Drum l muir, well known on this coast' She was sold to Hind. ' Rolph & Co, by ; Barneson, the former owner, for a sum i In the neighborhood of $22,600, It is ra- -. I ported. : '-..: '.r ' ;" , Tha ' Dnimmulr waa chartered by Hind, Rolph A Co, for voyage to 8yd ! ney with lumber from this coast while ' the market was well, up, her rate being ." 60 shillings.,--, .. --v.:'s..v - Since that time the rates have gone down until now they 'are about 42a d. and aa the bark only arrived at San i Francisco from Newcastle, N. S. Wv oh , October 1, tha difference in rates meant a big loss on the cargo to Australia. For this reason, according to the re port, tha charterers decided that It ' would be cheaper to buy tha vessel as the price paid would be less than the difference in the rate at which aha waa . taken and that now In force. Tha Dnim mulr will load lumber for Sydney at one ' of the north Pacific ports as soon aa aha ' has discharged her coal cargo at San Francisco. . t , GIVES , CAUSE OF- WRECKS Xumarked Channels In Alaska Wa ters Blamed. Mr. Willis said that he will leave the " service January SI of this year to enter Into business at Juneau.' where ha has " resided for .over IS years.-!,:; j-- 'While there have been a number of wrecks, this year on the Alaska coast, says Mr. Willis, it la not through fault of aids to navigation, but owing to the fact that vessels start in to make new '. ports where canneries) have been estab lished recently, and where It haa ' been impossible to put aid immediately. As a matter of fact, ha says, the aids to navigation in regular channels, AUskan waters, are in good shape.
