Colts Rally and Tie Score With
Six Runs in Eighth But
- Boot Throws It Off,
Tacoma. Wash., Bept 1. Portland
came near grabbing off the "Umpire
Day" game here yesterday by an eighth
inning rally, but Harry Kallmann's
error in the last half of the frame
spilled the beans all over the park. It
allowed West, the new 'first baseman.
to score th winning run with two out
Tacoma had been finding Todd pretty
easy and had amassed a six run lead
up to the eighth. The 8000 fans who
came out to do honor to Jimmy Toman,
hero of Umpire's day, - lolled back In
their seats and took it for granted that
the game was as good as won. How
ever, you can't tell what surprises
baseball has in store for the fans.
Dave Bancroft started the rally with
a double and the hits fell in clusters
in the Tiger inner and outer-works.
When Harry Todd was out trying to
stretch a double into a three-bagger, the
score had been tied with six fat runs.
West doubled for the second time in
the eighth, it being his third hit of
the afternoon. Hensllng beat out a bunt
to Hynes, who had succeeded Todd, but
Keller hit Into a double play, the Colts
holding West on third. Harris and
Neighbors, pinch hitters, walked. Mc
Mullln grounded to Mohler, who made
a perfect peg to Heilmann, but the lat-

Champion Pedestrian Plans to
Leave Portland Oct, 1 and
Average 48 Miles a Day,
Leaving Broadway and Yamhill
streets, Portland, on the morning' of Oo
tober 1, Dan OXeary, the champion
walker of the world, will attempt to
walk to San Francisco In 18 days. The
dlstanco will be 770 miles. This is the
urst time any one has attempted to
make the trip In any given number of
aays.
O'Leary. who celebrated his 70th
birthday recently by walking 70 miles.
stepping out to Mount Hood and part of
ine way back, rigures that by doing
the distance in 16 days, he will only
have to average something like 48 miles
a day, which, his friends say, Is merely
a constitutional for him.
The roads ought to be in Drettv
fair shape by October, and ir will be
just cool enough for me to make good
time," said O Leary this morning. I
am setting 16 days as the maximum
time I shall need. If nothing happens
may be able toWalk it in less than
that time, I don't know that any
body has ever established ay sort of
a record between Portland and San
Francisco, and this will be one that all
the pedestrians may aim at
'I shall not set out to walk a cer
tain number of miles each day. I may
walk 60 or 70 miles in one day ad 20
or 80 the next It all depends on how
I feel."
At Qresham Saturday night O'Learv
defeated Kastman and Wilson, skaters,
by 10 yards. Wilson was giving O'Leary
a close race, when his skate strap broke
and put him out of the race. Ha wants
to race the champion walker again, be
lieving that he will be able to win.

tnan nis opponent, who is of a stocky
build, although both boys are natural
lightweights. Both took a complete
rest Sunday, and neither left his hotel
until a late hour this morning.'
I do not anticipate having any dlf

the twelve rounds, although I under
stand ha Is a clever and strong boxer,"
said Cross today. "The training I did
at Los Angeles for the bout with John.
ny Dundee which was called off on ac
count of Young's death, has stood me In
good stead, and I am In fine fettle."
Barrleau would not discuss his
chances of wlnnlnar over Cross but de

contender had not affected his nerve
and that he would put up the best fight
he Is capable of.
Freddie Welsh and Willie Ritchie,
who will box here Sept 20, for the
lightweight championship of the world,
will be at the ringside.
During his stay here, Cross will en
