Following a visit to Maryhlll, where
they spent Sunday with Samuel Hill,
investigating the hard surfaced roads
on the Hill estate, and Monday, making
their annual visit to the Eastern Ore
gon hospital at Pendleton, State Treas
urer Thomas B. Kay and Secretary of
State Ben W. Olcott reached Portland
yeiterday morning on their way back to
the state capital.
In speaking of the visit to Samuel
Hill's estate on the upper Columbia,
Mr. Kay said: "Mr. Olcott and myself,
together with President Young of the
North Bank road, left Portland Satur
day night for Maryhill upon the invita
tion of Samuel Hill, to spend Sunday1
Inspecting t.ie various kinds of hard
surface-highways which he has built
there for demonstration purpose.
"We found that Mr. Hill had about
10 miles of splendid roads at Maryhlll.
We made a careful examination of them
and gleaned some Information which
will be of value to the state highway
board which was created by the. last
legislature, and which will be organized
eaVly In June.
"Leaving Maryhlll Sunday night, Mr.
Olcott and myself went on to Pendle
ton, where we spent Monday Inspecting
the Eastern Oregon hospital, located In
that city. Both of us were very much
pleased with what has been accom
plished by Superintendent McNary. We
found that wonderful progress had been
mads in clearing up and improving the
farm surrounding the hospital grounds
Although it has been less than four
months since Dr. McNary and .his corps
of able assistants opened the Pendle
ton institution, we found that they '.lave
a fine garden planted from which they
will take sufficient vegetables and gar-
den truck for the use of the hospital
for the remainder of the year, and
from the alfalfa fields, they will cut
sufficient hay to supply the institu
tion's dfvlry herd and other livestock.
"Dr. McNary has made fine progress
in levelling up the rough grounds sur
rounding the hospital and will soon have
several acres of lawn around the insti
tution buildings. He has his force well
in hand and conditions at the institu
tion are more favorable than we thought
it possible for them to be in-so short
a time." " - .
Mr. Kay Is spending the day In Port
land visiting relatives while Mr. Olcott
returned to Salem on the early morn
ing train. -
tual construction work has been under
way only IB days.. ,-
' On'lh west side 20 workmen are lay
ing rails from Jefferson street toward
Salmon on Broadway and are putting in
connecting tracks, frog t and switches at
jerrerion street. '
Ralls for the double tracks from the
west approach of the bridge to Burnslde
street are laid already, along with the
third rail to handle broad guage cars in
event the proposed Heusner franchise Is
granted by the voters at the election
June 2.
Work from Burnslde to Morrison will
be held up pending a decision by the
people In regard to the Heusner fran
chise. If it is. beaten, Mr. Fuller said
work will' be started immediately to lay
the narrow guage tracks, as equipment
Is already on the ground. In event the
Heusner franchise Is carried, the work
will be delayed somewhat awaiting the
arrival of special switches and frogs to
enable tne joint use of the street by
narrow and broad guaged lines,- This
extra equipment has been ordered al
ready. ...
