Eminent Cleric Regards Sci

(Special to The JcirBi.t -
Baltimore, Md., April 21. When part
of the speech of Sir William Osier at
the dedicatory exercises of the Phlpps

the prelate exclaimed:. ;
"I am Knocked." .
Sir William, who is professor of med

"Primitive views will prevail every

So recent Is the control of the forces
of nature that even in the most civil

himself to the new conditions and stands

Attacks Scientists' Attitude,
"Scientists in any line sometimes
make statements such as that of Dr.
Osier," said the cardinal. "And only
a short time ago I had to defend some
truths that, Thomas A, Edison attacked.
"These aclentifio specialists think
their etatements should go unchallenged,

I shall write to him asking him to re

"I would like to call the attention of
Dr.' Osier to the fact that Pasteur was a
devoted Catholic and put his trust in the
saints. He said that as hia knowledge
of medicines increased, his faith grew
likewise. The statements attributed to
Dr. Osier are an attack on Christianity.
"I am surprised that he should make
such attacks in this age.
"What do the things that Dr. Osier
preaches stand for, anyhow. Fifty years
hence all his teachings may be over
thrown by new discoveries, Ills whole
doctrine is baaed on ..theory. .r...l..:;. ',
"Fifty years ago the scientists of that
day imagined they knew all that was
to be known of medicine; yet today their
conclusions are overthrown by later dis

cardinal regarded his reputed utter

"I am ho enemy of the saints," he de

cardinal, about this as aoon as I get
