THE OHECON DAILY JOURNAL, POUTLAMD, I OHDAY EVENING, ' APRIL 21,'
Fourth Straight Game Won by
Southerners After . Be-avers
' Had Piled Up Big Lead, :
When the third Inning1 passod yester
day afternoon the Portland fans lollod
back In their scats and wondered at the
possible dimensions of the Beavers'
'' score. It was the first time during
the week, that Portland has shown hit
ting life, and their six binglcs In tne
first three tinfn,ss gave thenfftVBMruns
. It looked like a, slaughter of Blondie
Crabh, but when Perrltt served the last
ball In the ninth Inning to the same bunch
It was the old, old story of defeat, gory
8 to 7 defeat, the, fourth straight of the
I week.. ' , '
The Angels chased Al Carson frqm the
box In the seventh Inning aar "he had
been pitching1 nice ball, and then -.e
visitor touched Harry Krause tip for
four runs, two Of them because Krueger
misjudged Kills' fly that wont for:
three bagger. It gave Los Angeles a one
run lead, that Portland tied up on Der
rick's threebagger and Fisher's slnglo In
the seventh,' but a double steal in the
eighth gave the southerners their win-,
nlng tally.
" Two Trisoo Xlds Jtesd Off. ' i
' McCredle, disgusted with the previous
showing of his regulars, led -off with
young Chick Cunningham and followed
with Harry Ileilmann, two Ban Fran
cisco kids,. Chick's initial effort of the
year was a pretty single to left Hell
jnann came along with a sacrlfce. Lind
say's single to center field filled the
bases. ' Rodgers hit a smoky one down
to Johnson, and Chick scored when the
ball rolled through Ernie. Doane'a single
to right scored -Lindsay.
' Carson was safe In the second inning
after forcing Fisher. Tbsn Cunningham
walked. HeiTmann moved, them up on
an out, and the pair scorcu on Lindsay's
hit across second,
Doane'a walk and Derrick's double in
the third gave the Mackraen another,
and Derrick brought "in the sixth run
when he stopped a pitched ball in the
fifth, took second on an out arid scored
on Carson's single to right that Howard
made a great try for.
, - Johnson Bides Ball Out
" Johnson put the Angelenos in the
running in the fifth when he kited one
of Carson's Offerings over the right field
fence-with two down. That was the
opening wedge. . Soldier ,A1 weakened
. rapidly. In the sixth Page walked with
one out, and Ellis singled to right
Moore's double to the right field fence
cored Page and put Ellis on - third,
whence he scored on Maggart's out,
Carson to Derrick. "V
Gill tingled to Hellmann and Johnson
walked In the seventh, when Hrause
was sent in Brooks singled to rlgnt and
filled tha bases. Wotell. pinch -hitting
for Rogers, who relieved Crabbe after
Derrick's double in the second, fanned.
Page grounded to Derrick and Gill
scored. Krueger played in for Ellis and
the latter sent a terrlflo fly over the
Dutchman's head, n seord Johnson

' '. ' DICK DONALD.
The above night letter was, received
yesterday from the great little Vancou
ver boxer, and makes certain that the
conqueror of Knockout Brown of New
York will be hero as scheduled. When
the. Hose City tics up at the Ainsworth
dock, foot 'of Irving street,' tomorrow
afternoon. It Is a safe bet that scores of
admirers of the. hard hitting lightweight
In Vancouver and Portland will be on
hand to greet him. . .
Portland fans are planning to take In
the Anderson theatrical appearance at
Vancouver tomorrow night and Wednes
day, at which tha boxer will go three
rounds with his brother Fred,' and also
give a general Idea of the camp work
necessary to prep re for a fight of the
Importance of that with Kayo Brown,
one of tha best advertised millers In
tha country, and thought unbeatable un
til he came out to the coast and went
to sleep under the hammering of Joe
Rivera and Anderson, -' -r
That Anderson will put tha northwest
on tha reap In things pugilistic is gen
erally conceded among the ring critics.
He has the punch and all he needs to
absolutely convince Wie fans is his abil
ity to assimilate punishment and the
display of a little more ability to de.
liver a knockout punch when he has his
man groggy. . '
Since he polished off Brown so ef
fectively. Bud has become a great power
among the first string lightweights, and
it will not be long before he will be as
much sought after, as Joe Rivers and
Wills Ritchie. His fight With Joe Man
dot, a clever boxer, next, month will
serve to bring out his ability to with
stand the continual pecking away that a
shifty boxer will bring Into action.

"Last night I thought of recalling
Dave Bancroft and making him either
regular shortstop or utility Jnf lelder, but
he won't add, much to the club in hitting
strength, and that Is what I need. I
think that I shall turn Hellmann and
Cunningham over to Nick Williams.
Both of them Bh w great proniloe but
they need the experience to be gotten
from playing regularly. They ought to
help Nick out. If pulled Bancroft
ovef it. would break up Nick's infield
combination, which looks like a winner."
It Is quite likely that Lou Stanley will
become a member of Nick's pitching
staff, according to the talk of Manager
Mao tms morning. He didn't say so in
as many words, but tha release of Jerry
Girot, onr of the two southpaws Nick
has been carrying, gives rise to this be
lief. Williams needs a couple of south"
