By J. W. JIM.
A few boys have made members of
the Oregon Society of Engineers and the
Tortland Trades club sit up and take
notice,' These boys, former students at
the Portland: School of Trades, are em
1'ioyed l(i architects' ffiees, in machine
and plunthjnjf en ops, 'as' foremen -of
bridge and construction crews all mak

hometliing about the school's product,
The visit has been arranged for next
Tuesday.
v nen tne srnooi or trades was or
ganised in 1908 the general Idea was
that it would be useful in handling the
t delinquent boy. The girls; department
was added the following year with
somewhat the same Idea as to girls. But
a-visitor to the school should abandon
the delinquent boy and girl theory un
less lie wishes a coo) reception from the
students. , ' v
School Wot a fonnatory.
There are no delinquents In the school,
and they are ticklish to the suggestion
that their school has any 'Yeform" char
acteristics. The dignity of skilled labor
and the advantages of "character are
l-.rld In high regard. The boys and girls
are so much In earnest that school gov
ernment has become practically auto
matic Instructor are busy teaching
rather than disciplining. - - - -
, A trip through the building during
F'-hool hours Illustrated the attitude -t
the student to his work. Forty or fifty
boys were busy in the drawing room,
and of that number not more than two
or three looked up for even a casual
glance. The rest were too busy at their
desks. ,
When this year's class of 35 boys and
girls Is graduated the total number of
graduates will approximate 85, to which
number should be added many not able
. to complete full courses. . - ,-
Good jobs await the boys, the arrange
ment with employers being that any boy
recommended by the school shall start
at net less than $2 a "day As a matter

Olren Thorough Shop Training
Portland's school of trades lias its
counterpart in only three father cities,
New York. Philadelphia and Milwaukee.
It takes boys and girls of 14 years who
have finished grammar nchool work and
attempts to save them from many ds
advantages of the apprentice shop ay
tem. The) boy is . taught the broader
phases of bis work; lie is given thorough
shop training aid academic Instruction
tliat equjps hini as a skilled workman
and open a future in his trade to him.
The general aim of the school may be
easily understood, but one is apt to be
overwhelmed by inspection of things the
boys, some of them yet in knee trou
sers, have done. , .
Perhaps their most ambitious under
taking Is a 70 horsepower gasoline tn-
glne now being built. The engine Is to
be supplemented by a 30 kilowatt gen
erator, engine and generator to be com
pleted in time for use at the San Fran
Cisco exposition.

nlsh all power used In Portland's school

pupils.
The boys say thst .when the expos!
tion Is closed their power plant may be
available for use In a new school of
trades building. Engine and generator
from rirst drawings to varnish." every
thing except castings, will be made by
the boys, and they would not except the
castings It the school was equipped with
a foundry.
To Vie Biff Cranes. -
Three powerful cranes for use In the
schools are nearlng completion. These
cranes are for actual use -not play
things -and in building them the boys
are paving something like $600 to the
taxpayers. ; Much of the machinery used
in the school was madc-by the boys, and
the machines are standing up under
their wook. A five horsepower steam
engine is well under way; a small gaso
line engine Is befng assembled,, and the
tool room Is well supplied with dies,
taps, standard gauges and other tools.
some listing In the catalogues aa high
as $60 apiece, all made by the boys.
The school's courses Include careen
try, cabinet making, pattern making,
machine ehop work, electrical construc
tion, plumbing and gas fitting, architec
tural and mechanical, drawing for boys,
and cooking, sewing and millinery for
girls.. -
