land. The appointment was announced
last evening by Governor Lister, Mr.
Darwin was born In Alabama March 2.7,

ford as superintendent of hatcheries, but
that all other positions will be filled by
Democrats, i Me said further that it is
his Intention rigidly to enforce all the
state1 fishing Jaws, particularly those re
la ting a the closed season on salmon. .
Henry Landes, of the state univer
sity, was elected state geologist at the
meeting of the state, geological board
here n yesterday - afternoon, -j Professor
Landes is to' be paid $7.60 a day from
June t5 to September J5 for time actu
ally in service, Sundays excepted. Other
geologists employed will be paid 5,;a
day. Harold E. Culver was employed
at a salary of 11600 a year vice George
W. Evans, resigned. ,: lie will serve as
deputy -geologist, assist - in preparing
manuscripts and in field and office
work. -
It. was voted to continue coal sur
veys In Whatcom, Lewis, Thurston and
vowim counties.
Miss Dahlberg of Seattle, who has re
cently .been Employed by the electric
light and powe company at ' Walla
Walla, has been selected as chief stenog
rapher for the labor commissioner's of
fle by Commissioner E. W. Olson, who
takes charge . Monday. - She is reputed
