This stand was. taken by the governor
following the receipt of telegrams from
George Kendall, president of the New
York Bank Note company, which
charged Stlllwell with bribery in connection-
with tha p a s s a g e of bills
through the state legislature Intended
to curb stock exchange operations.
Kendall asserted that Senator Still
well made several demands- on him
for money, citing apeelfio Instances.
On one-occasion. Kendall said, Stlll
well told him that the bill Incorpor
ating stock exchanges would not be re
ported out of committee unless Still
well were paid $3500.
Kendall declared he ' told Stlllwell
that unless the bill were reported out
within 21 hours he would take the case
to Govemor-Sulser, The bill was re-
ported.
Stlllwell denies Kendall's allegations,
Indicated tlmt he passed away " while
asleep and without the slightest strug
gle. He was last seen at the hotel Sat
urday night.'
As his room was locked all day Sun
day and remained fastened yesterday
morning, the hotel maid reported the
matter to the hotel management. Man

ing the logging railroad for the Smith
Powers Logging oompany out of Myrtl
Point, will soon put a large additional
force of men at work on the construc
tion. The road, according to .the con
tract, is to be finished for a distance
of about 20 miles by July and to meet
with these conditions It will be neees-,
sary to do some rushing work.
When the road is finished the South
ern Pacific will run the trains on the
lin from Marshfield to Myrtle Point
on down over the new Smith-Powers
line, thus giving the southern part of
the county passenger and freight ser
