(Special to Tbf Journal.
Condon, Or, March The women of
Condon are more sealous for clean poll
tics than are the, men, although they
have never had the right to vote, their
first opportunity coming at the city
election next month. This was demon
strated Tuesday, when some of the
local women realized that It might be
fitting and proper that President Wil
son's Inauguration day be Observed In
Condon by at least raising the stars and
stripes on the courthouse.
Thoy accordingly telephoned to Sher
iff Montague and asked that the flag
might be raised. Someone, In the court-1
bouse, which is said to be a sort of
headquarters for the Bull Moose ele
ment here, conceived that it might be
a good joke on the women to run up an
old bed blanket instead of the flag and
this was done.
However in a very few minutes after
ward a delegation of women, who
thought it anything but a Joke, called
on Mayor Burns and wasted no tlmo
In telling him of their opinions In the
matter. The. mayor hastened to get la
touch with the sheriff and informed htm
of the situation. The Bull Moose flag
was quickly lowered and the national
emblem was run up in its place. The
women. Went their, way rejoicing.
The majority of the women who con
stdered the raising of the blanket as a
poor Joke, were Republicans. They
said that President Wilson is to bo
president of all the people and they
considered themselves as part of the
people, andV while they possibly would
not have voted for him, they felt that
no personal preference or prejudice
should take the place of national pride.
The men were heartily In accord with
the women In the matter, but waited
for them to take the first action.

and turn southward to Coos Bay.
There had been a more or leas general
belief that the company would bull!
from Eugene to this place, and then
having reached tidewater would rest for
a time, but the speed with which the
right of way further has been secured
anil the fact that the right Of way has
been ordered cleared both lead to the
conclusion that there will be no pause
In construction work.
'With the coming of settled weather,
the whole Sluslaw valley will be a scene
of activity. Nearly a dosen camps have
oeen established by. Porter Bros., and
their sub-contractors, and more than
half of the right of wav has already
been cleared. As soon as supplies can
be taken In, crews will be put at work
and grading commenced. EOulpment
here Includes two sets Of steam shovels
with donkey engines and dump ears.
Commissary supplies have been stored
In the warehouse here.
Porter Bros, have work nearly done
on their tunnel on the Wildcat creek, a
rew miles west or Notl tunnel through
the summit. The Wildcat tunnel is to
be 450 feet long, and already over 350
feet have been excavated. From this
tunnel a dozen miles either wav the
grading will be easy, as the valley Is
fairly open, but as the line nears Maple
ton the grading will be haavler and
there will have to be several bridges
across the Sluslaw In order to avoid
tunnels through rock points that come
aown to tne nver.
