JuJgo W. p, Fenton, chief counsel of
tho Southern Pacific in Oregon, pre
sented a view of the commerce revolu
tlonlzlngi effect of the Panama canal
Derore th rrogrcBslve Business Men
club yesterday, whloh d d not include
prediction of harrn to the railroads from
the opening of the Panama canal
He agreed with J. N. Teal and other
authorities that lumber and wheat -and
hardware will largely go by water
routes, but this to the railroads, he said
will be a "profitable loBs,"-elnee. these
are articles now transported at a little
above the cost of transportation, with
no consideration for the capital in
vested.
- Mississippi Valley to Profit
Practical elimination of the heavier,
cheaper commodities, he predicted, will
enable railroad, systems to equip -for
faster and more efficient moving ot
lighter and mora valuable shipments,
and will save the expense in Increased
trackage and terminal facilities neces
sary to the handling of the natural In
crease in heavy business. .
But, predicted Judge Fenton, the Pan
ttna canal will not realize in Pacific
coast profits as brilliantly as has-been
painted. The opening of the canal will
make the great Misr-lssipul valley
prominent competitor with the coast for
both oriental and Atlantlo coast trade.
To prove his point he quoted from O. P,
Austin, chief of the bureau of statistics,
as follows:
. Will Shorten Distances. ;
"The opening of the Panama canal
will shorten the steamship routes from
New Orleans to Manila 1953 miles; to
Hongkong, 2062 miles; to Shanghai, 8498
miles; to Melbourne, 4876 miles; to To
kohama. 6203 miles, and to Wellington,
7681' miles. More than that, it will
place New Orleans nearer to most of
these ' ports than is London, the great
commercial center of our principal rival
in the oriental trade."
F. N. Clark, in a short address, cor
