Causes and Results of. Bloody
' Revolution When ' Poles
Threw Off Russian Yoke,
. Given; Meeting This P; M.
In connection with th celebration of
the Pole all over thS country of the
fiftieth aniversary- of their last upris
ing against the yoke of Russia, the Pol
ish' National Alliance has riven nut th
following' brief history of the t causes'
.that led to the Insurrection and the re
sults of the rebellion. The celebration
In Portland wljl be held in Danla hall.
- on Russell street, at 2;30 o'clock p. nv
The article says: ,
, "Half a century ago Poland was en
gulfed In her last bloody uprising to
throw off the hated yoke of Russian
-pprossion,
After the unsuccessful Insurrection
Jf 1831 when Poland's best and noblest
Moment waiP'etther exterminated on the
.battlefield or sent to rot In "the grave
Vf the living" Siberia the conditions
were growing worse every day, Open
yy, Russia did not dare to trample upon
fthe treaty of Vienna of 1815, and her
own Onranlo Aat of 1833,-But these ob-
ligations, N apparently binding and re-
P-aoiea, were a dead letter in the prao
tlcal administration of Poland's affairs.
Poland had to contribute $23,000,000
yearly to the coffers of her Inexorable
mlstrebs. Besides this Poland had to
uppor 100,000 Russian troops sta
tioned within her territory. Her com
merce and Industries were paralysed
and exports to Russia practically pro
hibited. The high schools and educa
tional Institutions closed, the remaining
limited number of lower ones admin
istered by hostile Russian , teachers,
fiwch Is the word picture of Poland
exhausted by her heroic struggle of
U3lK prostrated under the foot of her
mistress; her property and citizen ex-
V officialdom, and her women to the
ibeastlality of 100,000 half-Mongolian
barbarians.
ILiy- Eussi Overreaches Self...,.
Vf "The people awed by the enormity of
.their own sacrifices, by the sky hlarh
Vrrave of country's defenders, and by
jChe red bloody trail left on the snow
covered wilds of Siberia by countless
thousands of ardent patriots, driven
In irons with rawhide knouts by Cos
sacks, fell into an apathetlo slumber,
Into a dogged martyr's resignation.
"Russia meanwhile kept on going
further in her determined effort to de
nationalize the unfortunate Poles. She
went too far,- however, In thlanefarious

'women and unarmed curious bystanders
on the btreets of Warsaw on February
16, 1HS1, repeated again on February
17, stirred the agonized Poles with
lightning like rapidity; rekindled the
dying hopes and created a thirst" for
revenge. These dastardly deeds that
cah bb wll compared with Herod's carn
age of Innocents, caused the Poles to
wake up and to protest, -
'"Then came the illfated statesman
llarquls Alexander Wielepolski. He did
not believe in insurrection. His aim
Was to consolidate the Interests of Po
land with those of Russia. He believed
in the racial affinity of the two na
tions. A very fatal delusion. He over
looked the basic difference between
Poland's western civilisation and Rus
sia's eastern barbarism; the diversity
Of religion, the Infusion of Mongolian
blood in Russians, and worst of all,
he failed to see the rivers of blood and
hatred parting the two nations for cen
turies. Indignation Par Xeaohlng.
"The indignation that swept Poland
was far reaching. Oreat 'demonstra
tions were held all over, culminating In
the meeting of two monster proces
sions, one of Poles and the other of
Lithuanians, on the river Nleman, near
Kowno on August 12, 1861. The
younger generation started to conspire,
to organize and to drill. Arms and am
munition were. procured and. smuggled
In, preparatory for a general outbreak.
ver-2400 schools were opened secretly
aiid supported by the patriots to edu
cate the masses.
-'Momentarily the Russian govern
ment was awed by these symptoms of
unrest and indignation and granted

Of the Poles, and the preparations, with
the avowed 'purpose of fighting sword
In hand for freedom, kept going on.
V to cap ine cumax, wnue inese un-
fderground preparations were going on,
planning a general outbreak at about
1685, Marquis Wielopolski, appointed
by the csar as the arministrator of Po
land's educational and religious affairs,
precipitated the catastrophe by advising
a forced and Illegal conscription of the
more ardent patrlotlo elements. He
knew that such procedure would result
In a premature outbreak, but being op
posed to insurrection, he aimed at It as
Is .plainly shown by his own words 'that
the boll was rips and needed lancettlng;
and In case' of the expected premature
bursting in midwinter, the rebellion
would be quashed within two Weeks.'
This decided the course of the conspir
ing patriots; they decided on the pre
mature outbreak to save 20,000 of the
best Polish youths who were to be sent
forcibly into the ranks of Russian sold
dlery, 1 Voles Attack Garrison.
"On the night of January 22, 186$,
about 8,000 men, chiefly youths and
students, armed withhold fashioned
musale loading shot guns, scythes, poles
nd sabers, (old family heirlooms) at
tacked simultaneously the Russian gar
risons in 17 different places. It was a
s'mnire beginning of a strange revolu
tion. Seventeen bands of unarmed men,
totalling la all 8,000- men, attacked 100,
000 regular troops tn well armed and
equipped garrisons and routed them Id
many -instances, taking arsenals-with
ammunition and even some cannons.
'The revolution- so started, Instead of
the two weeks predicted by Marquis
Wielopolski, lasted over IS months, ac
companied In some instances by signal
victories of the Poles. It was not a
regular conflict, but an endless chain
of small engagements, There are ' re
corded over 600 such encountersand
each of them claimed its quota of mar
tyrs and victims. - The Russian soldiery
after every victory over a handful of
bare footed, poorly clad, v unarmed,
starving and freeslng patriots, pillaged
and burned down the neighboring VU-,
lages, .murdered women and children
and indulged In all kinds of excesses.
"It Is estimated that during the cam-
paign. over 0,000 Poles were under
an and 4wi40(M)00 ware aUbexJJlliuVJ
sent to. Siberia or ? executed for either
directly or indirectly abetting the revo
lutlon. The Russian losses, according
to Russian official statistics, amounted
to 40.006. . '
"Undt r such trylna- circumstances the
revolution could not last very much

longer. To make matters worse, the
Russian army, numbering now about
100,000 Continued her orgy and excesses.
The conquerors obtained forcibly many
servile addresses of loyalty from var
ious cities and provinces. The higher
officialdom started a series of balls and
fetes, forcing the poor, weeping and
martyrised Polish matrons to attend.
Could there be any worse torture for a
Polish woman than . to dance and be
merry, when her father, husband and
son were rotting in the dungeons of
citadels or starving in the woods. Bhe
had no choice In the matter; there were
Russian bayonets and the fear that her
refusal would be the death warrant of
her dear ones, that forced her to dance
and be merry on the grave of her fath
erland. .
"The revolution was doomed, and fell,
but it gained at least one moral vic
tory, that of the emancipation of the
peasant class, although distorted and
misconstrued by the cunning Russian
government - The last tragic event of
tho movement was the execution or the
five members, forming the secret Pol
ish government with Remuald Traugut
at the head as dictator. It was an awe
Inspiring scene touching the coldest
hearts.

ancient city of Warsaw. From early
morning masses of people thronged
around the place of execution, guarded
by a strong body of the army,
TIT Men Executed.
At 9 a. m. appeared the exe
cutioner with the death procession,
composed of the five condemned
men, on five small black painted
wagojiettes, . accompanied by as
many praying friars. Upon being taken
from the wagonettes and put In line,
the off'cer lh charge read the sentence
in a trembling voice. It was an impos
ing moment in its horror. Silence was
supreme and a death pallor spread over
the faces of the 10,000 assembled spec
tators; the sabres trembled in the hands
Of the guards. In the midst of this sil
ence the steps of .the victims resounded
on the platform of the gallows, re
sembling hammer blows on the cover of
a coffin. Calmly, the victims started
to pull the nooses over their own heads.
The pent up and suppressed emotion
of the assembled throngs was at Its
breaking point. Suddenly, a heart rend
ing cry of fhe thousands' of spectators
pierced the air and all of them fell on
their knees. It was the executioner
that knocked out the stool from under
Traugut's feet, and the white figure
of the dlotator remained stretohed in
midair, swinging lightly from side to
side. The procedure was repeated me-
thodlcally with remaining four heroes.
When Zuirnski'a turn came, his sister,
present among the throngf spectators,
exclaimed: -'Courage, brother!" Poor,
brave, Spartan woman. In a few mo
ments more five white clad figures were
swinging In the light breeze. The
throng remained kneeling and praying
for thn Rironlilnir martvrs. The names
I of th fixpniitpd are: Romuald TrauaTUt.

BAG ADVANCE IS A
BIG SCARE TO ALL
Dealers As Well As Growers Are
, Alarmed at the Sharp IUm
- -m jnt prices."
The sham advance in the nrlce of iuta
sacks during the week has scared deal
ers as weit as growers. The market was
trreatly excited during the week owing
to the inability of buyers to secure con
flrmatlon of orders that will allow ship
ment, until rather late tn the season. .
The burning of a big doth factory In
Calcutta was one cause of the advance
hers-tJuring th-week although the ex
tremely strong demand , that has ben
shown for bags In Argentina reoently
nun oean a iactor oi importance.
The future of the trade is uncertain
but the outlook Is seemingly for higher
prices. Naturally in a market like the
present one there is more or less specu
lative interest therefore It is extremely
hard to ascertain the exact situation. In
fact, even leading handlers say they are
unable to forecast prices for the imme
diate) future.
HIDE MARKET SHOWS
There is a rather firm tone in the hide
market contrary to expectations and
prices are being maintained. Cattle tiave
been mo scare all over the country thai
leather interests have been forced to
meet the views or holders.
A late Boston malt advice saya of the
situs tlont
"Firmness still marks prices in the
leather market In spite of the quiet and
dull condition of trading during the past
ween, and nope ror a renewal or active
trading in the Immediate future con
tinues to exist among th dealers. The
Dast few days have seen a slight in
crease in sole leathers, but Interest in
upper stocic aoea not seem to have in
creaned much.
"Dealsrs expect prices to remain firm.
So far as sol leathers are concerned,
this seems to be a natural condition,
for it is known that sole buyers have
been looking about of late, and free
fiurchasing is expected soon and last all
hrough the spring. Much of the sole
leather coming In from the tanneries Is
being applied to existing contracts.
"Union backs have been in demand,
lisrht weights going at 40c and mediums
at 80c. HcoUred oak backs also have
been m lair oemana. uak and union
offal are reasonably popular.
"In upper leathers dullness has been
pronounced, but dealers anticipating a
better demand have shown no Inclina
tion to shade prlcea."
