during the featlval. In order that its
glittering and brillaot pageantry may
add to their entertainment Railroads
are arranging for special low fares that
will bring increased attendance.
"All In all," said Manager George
Hutchln of the festival, yesterday, "we
have the certainty of the greatest orowd
that ever assembled In Portland for
any event; we want, and If supported
wlU make the featlval th best ever
seen In order to compensate th attend
ance. But we will nave to cut the
coat to fit the cloth. We can't give
a better festival than the people ap
propriate for."
"For that reason." said W. C. Bristol,
crown prince of the Rosarlans, "we are
going to ask the business Interest of
this city to look foe the first time upon
the festival in Its true light When they
contribute to the festival It ls not a
donation to charity, but an lfrvestment.
It is a business proposition pure and
simple. By it we attract The people,
By It we advertise city and state. Peo
ple who come here spend money, great
sums. - i venture mat ten times as much
money is left here each year as the
festival costs. Where can better re
turns be obtained? At the same time
we ourselves get an opportunity to
break out of our shells and really en
joy life for a week.
President Ralph Hoyt of the Rose
Festival is In New Orleans. He will
remain to see th Mardl Gras before
going on to Panama. The Mardl Gras
has four parades, he eaya. and costs
2260,000. He ls curious to learn the
truth of the statements frequently made
in Portland by former New Orleans
people, that the Rose Festival Is more
magnificent than the Mardl Gras.
