were yesterday completed for tlie most
important gathering Salem has enter
tained for many years, the annual
banquet of the Board of Trade, and
wnicn is to be tne oegmning or a
campaign through which Salem may
realize the tremendous benefits her
position .warrants by reason of the con
structlon of the Portland, Eugene &
Eastern railway.
The banquet will be held at Hotel
Marion xm the night of January 29
and all the heads of the various de
partments of the P., E. & E. interurban
system have accepted invitations to
be present. In addition, the head of
ficers of the Southern Paciflo com
pany and of the Oregon Electric will
be here. Gathered to meet them will
Salem and most of the members of
the legislature now in session at the
capltol building.
Realising that wherever electric roads
have been constructed, there has fol
lowed a wonderful growth of rural
population and small farm develop
ment, the Board of Trade believes that
a similar growth is ' in store for the
Willamette valley, where the P., E, &
E. is constructing the largest Inter
urban system now building on the west
coast.
Salem is located in the center of this
activity and will be in position to profit
from Its operation, which will fur
nish rapid transit service between this
city and every other section of the val
ley. The officers of the Portland, Eu
gene & Eastern railway will be asked to
thoroughly explain to the banqueters
all of their developed plans and upon
that Information plans for a publicity
campaign will be based.

LOGGING ROAD PROMISED

Seaside, Or., Jan. 23. Leander Le-
beck, a bridge contractor of Astoria,
who owns a large tract of timber a few
miles east of Seaside, Is in the city
planning a logging road into the tract
and the erection and equipment of
buildings suitable, for a logging-camp.
He expects to commence operations ear
ly In the coming month. . Other timber
operations are expected here, among
them tha resumption of work at the
local sawmill, which has been idle' since
last spring.
