the Elizabethan room of tho Hotel Im
perial for a four day session, The con
vention was called to , order by Presi
dent Glen Goodman of Rospburg.,

questions Important to men engaged in
the hardware- and -implement business
wilt, come ;iifor . discussion, including
parcel post atid Ha probable affect on
the trade, ' ' '
It. Is anticipated that the convention
will take a firm stand against fake ad
vertising, and will join in the campaign
now being waged against merchants,
manufacturers and tradesmen who fall
totell the publiu the truth- regarding

G. Clark of Portland, formerly president
of the Ad club, will be one of the fea

noon, the invocation was made by. Rev,
J. W. Price, and lie was followed by
President Goodman, who gave Ills an
nual address. The secretary treasurer's
report and the auditing committee's re
port were given, and president Goodman
announced the appointment of various

ture department of Deere & Co.. of
Mollne, III., and M. Bliearman, the Pert-land-San
Francisco editor of the Hard
ware World, were - among those who
were on 'the program for addresses this
afternoon. President Goodman reviewed
the activities of the association during

Restaurateur Swindled In New Way.

Paris, J a, 21. How two men with no
trinnev but a snurinus f fOO , bank note
made an excellent dinner and swindled
a restaurant keeper , out of $90 Was re
lated 'to ? the , police, recently. ; ;
When the men had finished their meal
one of them purposely collided with aind
upset the table, which was laden with
costly glass. The, proprietor claimed
$10 for the damage,- but the man pro
tested that he had no money.
"Starch him," advised the accomplice.
The proprietor did so, and In his purse
found a bank note for $100. Deduct
ing 4he amount of the damage, be hand,
ed back tho change. It was only after
the men had disappeared' that it wa
discovered that the bank note was , a

MRS. N. ROBINSON DEAD;
FUNERAL TOMORROW
The funeral of Mrs. NJNnie Robinson,
wife of James F. Robinson, grand secre
tary of aUe atfillatedMasonic bodies Of
Oregon, will be held tomorrow morning
at H o'clock at Holman'a chapel. Tern,
porary interment of ., the body will be
made at- Holman'a until the new Port
land mauseoleum is completed in the
Masonic cemetery.' Services will be con
ducted by Rev. J.' H, Boyd of the First
Presbyterian church, of which she was
an active ; member.
The death of Mrs. Robinson occurred
yesterday, afternoon at 3 o'clock at the
family residence, 680 Broadway street,
following an Illness of a year. She has
been confined to' her bed for -the past
ten montns. . it
As Nanny Hdghes, she was born In
England, but came to -this country with
relatives at an early age. , They located in
Wisconsin and she lived there until 1882,
when she came to Oregon, marrying Afr.
Robinson in .Eugenj in '8t. Mrs,. Robin
son was a great home (over and before
her death, saw to it that all of her
children had been comfortably provided

Beside, her husband, : three children
survive. They are Mrs. C. Uttler of
Alhany, Mrs. H. M. Hendershott of Port
land and Pkalph D, Robinson of Port

She has taken no part in tho activi
ties of the Masonic auxiliaries since lo
cating in Portland, but previously was
prominent In the work of the Eaatem
Star. She was distantly related to Lord
Roberts, former commander In. chief of
the British military forces and of the
Lewis family of Liverpool. ; ;
