won the Bulletin's annual cross city
run from the ferry to the beach here
today. Vlught. who also won last year,
did the 7 4-8 miles today in 41 mlnutei
flat. Last year his time was 44:20. To
day's race was one of the best contested
events of the sort ever run In the city.
Oliver Millard of the Olympic club was
second, and II. L. Morton of the Pas
time club and VC H. Qulnn of the Y. M.
C. A, ran a dead beat for third place.

Manager Nolan Says He Has
Received Several Tele
grams From Him,

Saa Diego, Cat, Jan. 1, That Packy
McFarland may be Willie Ritchie's op
ponent July 4, when the lightweight
champion defends his title for the first
time. Is; the belief of Billy Nolan,
Ritchie's pianager.
Nolan received today several tele
grams from Chicago, saying that Mc
Farland was anxious for the match. No
mention was made as to weight and
Nolan said McFarland must state the
weight before negotiations would be
closed.
Nolan says that as Ritchie has twice
beaten Wolgast, Ritchie would have
nothing to gain from a third fight with
Ad.
Nolan would match Ritchie with Mc
Farland and says hs will concede
weight to Packy, something he will not
do for any other fighter.
Ritchie's Brother Heard From.

Chicago, Jan. 1. Lou Steffen, brother
of Lightweight Champion Willie Ritchie,
Is In receipt of a letter hero today from
his fighting brother. ,Lou is a black
face comedian.
"Willie is just the same kid now that
he was a year ago," said Lou. "8uccess
never would turn his head. He would
rather go around with the boys of the
old neighborhood than take up with new
friends. This sort of peeves Manager
Billy Nolan, but Willie dpn't care."

rough basketball game was played Mon
day night by the Dallas high school
vs. Ashland' high, with a score of 15
to 26 in favor of Dallas. Many of the
players were hurt, none seriously, how
ever. Dallas carried off three men, who
were able to go Into the ame within
a few minutes, but had one man dis
abled. Nearly BOO persons Witnessed the
game. A banquet was given the men
after the game. The Ashland team Is
touring. the state and la soheduled to
play the Independence Athletic club to
night, at Independence.
Dallas high defeated Aahland by a
score of 21 to 31 Saturday night
BASKET BALL NOTES
The Washougal, Wash., basketball
quintet defeated the Christian Brothers'
college team Saturday night by the
aoore of 18 to 15. The basket throwing

that of any Portland team that has
played Washougal this season. Wash

Harlem Tommy Murphy of New York

Both made the weight without dif
ficulty. This was the first time the
new ruling of the New York boxing
commission regarding a new seals of

Betting early today favored Burns at
odds of 10 to 7.
The fans are backing the Oakland man
on the strength of his decisive work
against One Round Hpgan, whom he
knocked out, and comparing this with
the showing made by Murphy against
Hogan. Murphy got a decision after 20

Justice Blhur today signed an
locutory decree of divorce in favor of
Mts. Nellie Chase, wife of Hal Chase,
the star first baseman of the New York
club of the American baseball club.
Mrs. Chase named several corespond
ents whom she declared were "female
baseball rooters.'.' She was given cus
tody of their child. The Chases were
married In San Jose, Cal., several years
