For a long time the trade here was unable to get even a Quotation from foreign inter ests for Pacif lo northwest wheat, but now bidding is quite fair. Foreign markets as a rule, were firm er and higher for the day and thig in ltseir was a very good lniiuence 10 cally. Market for oats is decidedly firm. Bids range from 326 to 326.60 for No. 1 feed and all buyers are now In the market at this range. There remains a very sluggish tone In the barley trade and only a nominal amount of business is passing. Hay trade remains firm and active at former quotations. Market for hops remains active with medium grade goods In principal de mand. Sales confirmed recently at Wil lamette valley points hava been mostly around 10 to 14o with a sprinkling of trade around 16o and a very small amount from 1 to 2o higher than these figures. American brewers are taking- hold rather freely at tha present price range and the outward movement is now the peat or the season. Recent business in the Taklma sec tion at extreme price Indicates an un natural condition of the trade. Owing to the fact that dealers who had .sold Sonomas short and were unable to get the proper quality there owing to the extreme wet harvest; a demand sprung up tor xne eastern wasnington stock, which generally , is accepted in lieu of Ponoma growth. Even at the present time it is possible for the best stock at Yakima to command from 1 to 2c a pound over the best quotations avail able here; the hops there having a mar ket entirely their own this season. A small amount of business passed in western Washington recently but the ouiK or tne good quality is already sold there and remaining lots are on about the same basis as the majority of local offerings. xso new Business nas neen conrirmed for foreign account, some transactions reported recently being several weeks Ol(l. . . f . f lrsi gained fame by flying off the roof of the Multnomah hotel. In this time approximately 40 buildings have been provided with escapes, that had been without them previously. A number of smaller ones are still without this protection. As soon as this work is completed, another flagrant violation of the law will be enforced. This Is a provision which calls for the posting in each room of a hotel a sign telling where fire escapes are located. According to Mr. Kremers, numbers of hostelrles have neglected this matter. Under the new building code, the menace of open elevator shafts and stairways Is done away with through a provision which stipulates that they shall be enclosed separately by fire proof material. In the case of stair ways, fire doors shall be constructed leading from the corridors to stairways. The code further provides that no ho tel of four or more stories shall be constructed of other than fireproof ma terial. This Includes apartment houses also.
