Line. , Tortland, Or., Nov. '14. To the Editor ot . 1'be Journal We, the members -of th Ilorth Porflantf CommerciaT club in answer : to th article printed In your issue of . Novertbbr 12 and the cdltorifc, ii your Issue of November 18,; have the following to say ' fKi'-f-.-: . The time Is ripe and the situation is opportune tb let the taxpayers of-the city of Portland, yes and of Multnomah county, know of the pussy footed meth ods of the P. R. U & P. Co. . The conrpany'S. Opposition both ,B the open and In the dark; to "the Heusn'er franchise has optned up an old sore and Peninsula, it you prefer, HhroughltM medium of th North Portland Cofnmwv clar club have thrown, our liat tai the ring and the fight Is on. , .;' , :'- ,TtifearT)ver 60,0T3eople-ln-North Portland and they are able to and have deeded just what they wantja.the. way Of rapid transit. ' ' , " Some few tnonths ago,- Ueorger F. Heusner applied to the ci ty' council for a standard, guage street railway frai thlse. from Kenton south over the VaA ions unoccupied. streets over the Broad way Midge and up Seventh street V) Urant; immediately the P. R. I & V. company took steps to block this fran chise by laying down on Maryland av enue (one of. the streets asked for by Mr. Heusner)i about 1200 feet of track by Virtue of a franchise now 18 years ojd. which has long ceased to exhjt by 'Operation of? laj. and by applylnsto the city scounoil for a franchise (.narrow gauge) over virtually the' same etreet that Mr. Heusner has selected. Unei ParaUtl. 1 V J. E. AV'erlein, tho special agent of .the P- R. L. & P. fcomnany. admitted In a meeting of the North Portland Cominef: vial'' club, that hi H)inpany never con templated building tho particular line asked lor until the Heunne people ap peared upon the spenc 'then they caflio to life and got busy. As far as tho Mr. Ticiisner lines par allelling the P.tR. L. & P. company's lines is concerned, it would be impos sible , to get to Hie west side without doing so, and moreover the company In leaving no means untried (and that is none at ally to get a franrhlsu overbite same streets and thus do the very same Jhlng they criticize Heusner for trying to do. . Vbat happened when the Mount Hood Electric company endeavored to come into Portland? . ' 'Why the P. R. L. & P. company through their eastern connectton.i and underhanded methods prevented the floating Of the Mount Hood bonds and obstructed in thoso dark and devloiH ways best known to it the entry of the Mount Hood : people Into Portland, iftid finally tkey absorbed, gobbled if you prefer, the Mount Uood company As a result, , we , are still .paying tribute to the P IV W & P. Company. v i To say that-standard gauge street car spi$ oyer the Broadway bridge would orify serve to lessen the efftclency'of the P. It. I & P. company's service i not agreeable to reason or common sense. Why every strap hanger in the city knows from his own experience that the efficiency of the company's service could not bo lessened, and they still hold their franchise, they sail Just as close to the wind as they can possibly -saltr The sooler we get standard guage street ear! in Portland the sooner we be come a standard or broad gauge city, and right there is where the present company holds the whip hand; keep alt tracks, narrow gauge, and they will continue-to, hold H; put down- standard gauge tracks and the heart of the city is openMo the wqrld. Whoever, advises the narrow gauge system has moss on his back, "is serving a selfish interest or Is a too). As to Interurban tdnes. The, forming of a more or. iess ex tensive Washington , Interurban' system Just what we havo In mind, and tho Columbia river bridge is not so fur in the dim future as some may think, and if it Is why not be prepared for It when it does come for It surely will. This much we can say that when the money Is available the bridge can be built und opened for traffic in two years. Quot ing Mr. Modjeskl. ' "Therefore wo should all gel together and build a blocul gauge city and In order to do ., that we --must be broad gauged ourselves." Has It .come to , the point where the P.' R. L,?& P. company may dictate the der.tlny of Portland? . , ; To say, that the Heusner. railway should' come across the Columbia river by means of the present railroad bridge Is hardly worth, considering, and It Is evident that the party who advanced such a scheme does not know whereof he speaks either Trom the legal point of view or that of an engineer. In short such a scheme is entirely absurd and ,1s Indicative of the calibre of the one' who suggested the sam?'-':'.. The Broadway bridge waV bulTt for the use of the people and hot the' street car company, ahd ree$ assured jt will .never be turned ovir to them or any one company. The P. RL. & P.. com pany applied for a franchise over the Broadway bHdge and finding that-they could pot- get it upon their own terms withdrew their application. Suffice It to say the Broadway bridge will always "be a common user bridge. We wish it to . be distinctly under .stood that we rfe In this fight for the good of all tho people and they, the people, 'demonstrated fully at the polls November 2 and 5 that tltey know their own minds and if necessary they can and will docldo this fight.
