Board Holds Conference With

Th park board yesterday afternoon
held ft special meeting with a special
committee from the Greater Portland
Plans association. The committee,
headed by Howard Evarts Weed, asked
the board If it was the Intention of the
board to carry out the' Bennet plans
for a city beautiful In case the voters
passed a charter amendment for a bond
ihsue of $2,000,000 of park bonds at the
. coming special election.
' In reply Superintendent Ml ache of the
park department and members of the
board said that in general the plans or
the board are in harmony with the Ben
net project, but that the latter would
not be followed In evry detail.

The Bowershotel was purchased yes
terday by Wright at Dickinson, propri
etors of the Oregon hotel, and will be
operated hereafter as an American plan
hotel. Messrs. Wright A Dickinson ac
quired the lease and furniture, owned
by the Bowers Hotei. company. Charles
H. Rowlejr, who has been manager-of
the hotel for several months, will re
main with the hostelry in the same ca
pacity, although the general direction of
the house will be under the supervision
of the new owners. -

Cottage Grove, Or., Sept. 20. The de
struction of the entire southern part of
tho city was narrowly averted In a fire
yesterday afternoon in which the Com
mercial stables and contents, with the
exception of the horses; the Burkholder-
Woods warehouse and contents: 8. R.
Piprr's residence, and a number of am all
storehouses were destroyed. The build
ings occupied by Knowles k Graber,
lnt which the Blmeral & VanDenbera
stock had Just been moved, Des Larzes
Bros., Cottage Grove shoe store and the
Thompson hotel caught fire several times
but wore saved by the fire laddies. The
Burkholder-Woods company and Rees-
Wallace company were thought for a
time to be In danger, and water was
thrown on the roofs, - K 1 '
The Commercial stables were well
filled with hay and burned with Inten
sity. At strong, breese made fighting
tho flames difficult As far as can be
learned all horses were gotten out of
the stables -without Injury, except one
belonging to Burkholder-Woods, which
was, badly burned about the neck. . i
