AUCTION'S
(Special to The JonrqiD -
Marshfleld, Or.. Aug. 10. That Wil
liam Joyner, who figured in the Jacob
Evans murder case,4ias also been mur- "
dered Is the theory upon which the of
ficers arc working. Joyner resided on a
small ranch near South slough and not
far from the Kvans place. Last, week
he disappeared apd has not been seen
since. He letthis o4likeh9,i!jRd live- ''
stock r.t .. the place uncared f6r and
there is every Indication that he has met
with misfortune. On account of uin r.fin.
nrctloh with the Evans case the officers
suspect that he has keen killed.
Joyner went to Jacob Evans' house 1
o accompany him to Marshfleld and.
after waiting for the old man for quite
a while wen in the house and found
Evans dead in the kitchen: where he
hud been shot. The officers were nevrar
abl to find who killed lijvans. A wee
ago an empty grave was found on thei
Evans place and now the mystery has
become greater by the disappearance of
Joyner. The latter, together with other
residents of the South Inlet country,
were before the grand Jury when the,
fcvans case was being investigated. It
s tnougnt that someone who had to do'
with ths Evans murder for reasons 'of
Uielr own wanted -Joyner out of the
way. . - v,.
Joyner obtained the drlnkins- water,
for his house located on the wagon1
road, by following a trail through the
woods to a spring on the bluff over the
bay. There are some indlcntlnna at th.
spring of a man haVlng been in am
bush and it Is believed that Joyner wasi
killed when he went for water and his
body welgMetf down" in "the bay. A
search is being made for the body and it
is said that Sheriff Gage has some
clues which may lead to arrests.
Joyner was formerly in the regular
army but had lived around gouth Inlet
for a long time. He was 'a man of
hotter education than would be expected
of one in his position and was past 30;
years or age. iie had led a rather tila-l
solute life.
