Chicago leads off with a handsome
gain of over $3,500,000 or 60 per cent
increase of last June's totals. New York
gains 9 per cent, and Philadelphia, 10
per cent. The large gains were made In
such cities as Washington, 102 per cent;
Buffalo, 129; Milwaukee, 178; Detroit,
61; Louisville. 122; Salt Lake, 115; Kan
sas City, 42; St. Paul, 35.
Portland's total for the month was
$1,176,000. Other coast cities made
splendid records. Ban Francisco going
over $2,000,000; Los Angeles making a
gain of 25 per cent, while Seattle showed
a standoff.
The decreases were widely scattered,
and In a majority of cases were in the
smaller cities.
While the extreme high temperature
prevailing throughout last week Inter
fered to some extent with the real es
tate market, house building,' particularly
of the better class of residences, was
unusually active. Above 30 permits for
homes to cost in excess of $3000 were
Issued last week. i
'There were also a number of permits
for important structures of other classes
taken out during the week. The largest
of these permits .was taken out by the
Foreland Seed, company authorizing the
construction of a five story mill con
struction warehouse on East Alder
street, between East First and East
Second at a cost of $60,000.
The Beed Institute took out a permit
for a one story concrete power house,
to be erected on the college campus at
Eastmoreland.
Joseph McClelland has begun the
erection of a $10,000 home In Irvlngton.
The drawings show an unusually attrac
tive two story frame structure of the
Colonial type. It will occupy a Quarter
block on Wasco street, near East Fif
teenth. Other Permits Zs'ned.
Thomas Q. Farrell has procured a per
mit fox. two and one-half story frame
dwelling, which he Is building on East
Twenty-fifth street, between Market and
Apartment Houses Will Cost $125,000,
