POLICE SERVICE IS
EQUALTOJDCCASION
Great Crowds Well Handled by
the Portland Police
Department.
THE Elks' grand lodge reunion from
the policeman's viewpoint is proving
the biggest Job of policing the local
department hns heeo'ratled upon to per
form at any time In Its history. The
Job was so llg aOd continuous, that
every resource of the department has
been taxed to Its limit. With thou
sands of people crowding the thorough
fares the hluecoats have been compelled
to keep the moving mass of humanity
In order and good humor.
Thus far this week the crowds have
been handled splendidly and everything
has moved ulong with military precision,
thanks to the discipline of the patrol
men, the majority bf whqm have been
on 'duty more than 14 hours each day
this week.
Practically every patrolman in the
service was detailed for duty during
the big parad1. Fifty-five blocks along
the line of inarch Were roped off, and
two policemen were stationed to each
block. In addition the city outside the
line of inarch was policed. It was nec
essary for Captain John Moore, senior
captain of the department, to call out
the entire police force, and 125 special
patrolmen in addition. t
On Tuesday afternoon, when th sky
line boulevard was dedicated by the
grand lodge, a company of police- was
on hand to keep order. That same night
patrolmen already weary from a day's
strenuous work, went on duty, keeping
back the- surging tli6uandswhq wlt
"hessed Ihe elecl'rlcarparade. """" "
Thus It has been all week. It Is a
Mg Job, but the department has proved
Itself big enough for th work.
425 REAL ELKS IN
HELENA, MONT., LODGE
One of tile foremost lodges of Mon
tana Is found at Helena, the capital of
the state. No. 13 was organized April
14, 1S91. under a special dispensation
and became a full fledged member of the
order May 20, 1891, when the grand
lodge granted dt a charter.
The present membership of the lodge
is 426. R. O. Kaufman, cashier of the
1'nlon Bank A Trust company, is exalted
ruler, and Frank D. Miracle is the grand
lodgn delegate.
Ka-strrn Elks Ritten by Fake Teeth.
Elks from New York town and the
larger cities located In territory con
tiguous to that small though well known
provincial village, on the Hudson, are
unitedly in favor of the alms and ob
jects of the Asiatic Kxcluslon league.
They particularly desire the exclusion
of Japanese skilled in making imita
tions of th real thing.
"Let the treaties go hang," they cry.
And the reason for their hostility toward
the sons of Nippon can he seen by an
one who will take the trouble to make
a minute examination of the elk teelli,
which they wear as watch charms, scarf
pins and cuff buttons. For in many
cases th teeth are not real elk teeth
at ell. Instead, they are clever imita
tions made by Japanese workmen. It
is estimated that moire than -10,000 Elks
In New York and Pennsylvania alone,
are sporting bogus elk molars. No one
knows exactly' how many got bitten. The
Japanese profited by taking advantage
of the Inbred mania of the American for
bargains.
