The public lands committee "will hold
a special meeting next Monday to con
sider the bill for the relief of Innocent

Hawley's bill for the relief of Silets
settlers is again held up In committee,
the general land office believing it has
found evidence that options have been
given on some of these lands and that
possibly some of these options may be
on lands affected by the Hawley bill.
The Borah-Jones homestead bill
passed the house Wednesday by a unan
imous vote. ' The bill reducos the home
stead period from five to three years,
gives homesteaders five months' leave
of absence each, and six months in
which to establish residence after mak
ing original filing. ",

army engineers, the senate committee on

Thomas Erickeon, a miner, was killed
Wednesday . when a snowslide swept
down the mountain above Kennecott
Erickson and J. H. Swanson.were buried
by the snow, but a relief party suc
ceeded in extricating Swanson and saved
his Ufa Erickson was burled ao deep
that life was extinct when the rescuers
reached him. ,

Forest Grove, Or.f March 28. Mrs.
Thomas F. Baldwin, aged 68 years, died
suddenly at the home of her daughter,
Mrs, Ellen M., Robinson, in this city,
Sunday morning. , Mrs. Baldwin was In
her usual health when she retired Sat
urday night, and a few, moments before
her death She awakened her - husband
and requested him to call their daughter.
Before medical aid oould be summoned
she had passed away. : 'Mrs. Baldwin was
born In Florida, Hillsdale county, Mich.,
December 13, 184.1. She was married
to Thomas Baldwin in 1861, and came
to Forest Grovo laet fall. Besides her
husband she Is survived by three chil
dren: T. . J. Baldwin, Portland; -R. D.
Baldwin, Marshall, Mich.. and Mrs. El
len Robinson, of . this elty. Funeral

Sheriff Rand of Baker-, who waa In
tho city seeking evidence relative to
the previous harga of shooting at the

at personal Injury was made. .
The church people, who were aroused
at the attack on tha church, are cont
sldering what means to adopt In view
of this new' development During the
past few weeks several open threats
have been made against the pastor and
the church, and It Is possible these
will be made a subject of grand Jury
Investigation when tha jury meets next
week at Baker.

Eugene, Or., March 28. Reoeivlng In

have killed an ordinary' man outright
J. Downey, a laborer, engaged In 'clear
ing the. right of way for the Southern
Pacif lo company's Natron-Klamath Falls
cutoff above Oakridge, died at tha gen
eral hospital Tuesday. While felling
trees on the right of way Monday a log
rolled over him, breaking both legs and
both arms and crushing him badly. He
was brought to Eugene on a work train
and died two hours after being taken
to the hospital. He was aged about 65
years. Nothing is known here of his
relatives. - -

Marshfleld, Or March tS. The cham
ber of commerce and . business men of
Coos Bay will take immediate steps to
hold a special election to vote again on
the proposition of forming the Port of
Coos Bay, the supreme court having de
cided Tuesday the old port- was
Invalid and does not exist The deci
sion was based on technical points and
as the people favored the formation of
the port by a vote of five to one when
the proposition first came up, It Is be
lieved it will again carry by a large
majority. , - .
It is hoped to form a new port tonn
enough for the new committee to make
provisions for providing funds to hold
the government dredge Oregon on Coos
bay. The government appropriation for
maintenance of the dredge will have
been exhausted by the latter part of
the summer and the plan-has been .for
the port commission to provide a fur
ther maintenance fund.

Salem, Or March 28.-To make the
publlo schools of the state more practi
cal 'and of greater usefulness to the
people, State Superintendent of Publlo
Instruction L. R. Alderman Is undertak
ing to establish an experiment farm In
connection with one high school m every
oounty In Oregon. By this method he
expects to have the schools assist In
bringing every section of the state Into
its highest efficiency of production. The
Innovation Is a step far beyond the old
ideas of conducting publlo schools.
Buch an experiment farm has already
been established at Klamath Falls and
the Prlnevllle . High school has done
some work along this line. The farms
will be under the inspection of the Ore
gon Agricultural college.
In connection with the work superin
tendent Alderman plans to have school
all the year round.. High school super
intendents, under this plan, will be hired
for a full year, and during the summer
months will conduot institutes along
agricultural lines,.

terday at the Oregon City hospital
from, the errecta or an operation, air.
Lee was stricken several day ago, but
did not summon a physician 'until yes
terday morningf He was brought to the
hoepltal for an operation. The aura-eons
found that peritonitis . had de
veloped and had little hope of their
patient recovering. Mr, - Le Rallied
after the operation, but at midnight had
a sinking spell and was unconscious
until. the end. He Is survived by , a
Widow and five children,

Carland of Athena, who dubs himself
Ramrod Bob, having broken all rec
ords for hiking in this pal t of the coun
try, today offers to wager 2500 that he
can outwalk any saddlehorse In Umatilla
county for a distance of 500 miles. Car
land last December made a record walk
from Pendleton to Spokane and-return,
making an average of a little more than
four miles an hour.

on the steel bridge, which Is about to
be built across the Santlam river at
