The Cotton Manufacturers' association
today rejected the demand of the union
for a 15 per cent increase in wages. The
textile council wtlr-tneet tonight to con
sider the rejection of the operatives de
mands, .and It Is regarded as almost
certain that a strike will be authorised.

Thirty-two operators conferred with
the same number of representatives of
the miners today, but the conference
was fruitless. The operators are adopt

DESTROYS LARGE MILL

Nelson, B. C. March 20. Following a
series of incendiary fires in the last few
months which have completely baffled
the police, the fire fiend appeared again
last night and as a result the big Yale
Columbia sawmill is a mass of smoul
dering ruins with a loss of $76,000. The
fire was discovered early this morning
" after it had gained considerable head
way, and but for the lucky fact that the
wind was blowing off shore, part of the
town would surely have been wiped out.
About 100,000 feet of lumber was de

Frank SumcSa. Mamie Summa, aged 7,
was fatally injured.
Cavalla at the time of the explosion,
