"We have here a trinity of evils that
are a disgrace to any well ordered com
munity saloons, gambling and a publio
dance hall, . .,
"In the saloons men hare been made
drunk and then relieved of their money,
one man telling of a loss In one even
ing of over $80. Others He out all
night, one man recently being found in
the mud under his horse's feet.' At least
one: saloon with property near by is
being used as a place of assignation.
Early Sunday morning on a number of
; occasions men and women In various
' stages of Intoxication have been seen
on the streets and other near by places
the left overs from the dance, waiting
for the early train to carry them back
to Portland. . Their obscene gestures,
attitudes and language were shocking,
i , "Sales of real estate that have been
almost accomplished, were turned down
because of local conditions, the would-be
purchasers declaring they would not
buy so long as Beaverton maintained
, her present civic conditions. Good peo
pie have moved out and others are only
awaiting the chance to sell In order to
move elsewhere.
. "Thess conditions exist because the
town was In the grip of political bosses
who did not hesitate to buy votes, cor
rupt officers In the discharge of their
duty and generally intimidate the town.
-"One of the difficult matters to be
encountered In any measures of reform
la the honest differences of opinion
among many who really desire the good
of the town.".
Mr,, Price advised the , gathering
together f ; the. temperance . forces
-and all others who really desire
to see a .' change and ' coming to
some common agreement. Rev. Mr.
Price pledging himself to stand by the

far as possible the wearing of them by

There is therefore no surprise at the
edict Issued today, in which Pope Pius
forbids cardinals and all other church
dignitaries to accept Invitations to so
cial functions where women are per-
mitted to wear decollete gowns. The
pontiff believes his order will tend to
do away with a lot of low-cut gowns
in Catholic circles.
There is- a show on at the Baker the
atre this week In which the leading
characters are numbered by the- thou
sand-yet not a sound Is heard from any
of them. These nature Thespians care
little for the carping critlo and his
kind. They go about their business day
after day without ever varying the per
formance by so much as the flicker of

gram. The pictures will hold the boards
all week. They are continuous, begin,

Caryll, head of the Caryll Cooperative
Industrial system In California, of hi
rela-tlons with Miss Harriett C. Rich
ardson, of Los Angeles.
Caryll arrived In Denver in custody
of a united States marshal. He was
arrested in San Francisco .on a charge
of sending obscene letters through the
malls to -Miss Richardson. The woman
Is in a California asylum as the result
of a mental breakdown which her
brothers declare resulted from Caryll'
letters. 1
Outlining his scheme of absolute life
to a group of newspaper men, Caryll
vigorously disclaimed any similarity to
the plan of Evelyn Arthur See of Chi
cago. He Insisted that his relations
with Miss Ricnardson were at all times
proper.
"I think far more of her than I could
of a wife, were I married. Our rela
tions were on a far higher pla'ne. We
hoped In time, by thought suggestion
alone, to create a new and perfect type
of life. My letters to her were sacred
and her breakdown was the result of
other troubles.
"This charge against me Is only part
of the persecution which I have been
forced to endure for 10 years since I was
driven out of Denver by the Colorado
Bureau of Child and Animal PnMeotlon,
it is pure spiteworK on the pai r rela
tives of Miss Richardson."
Regarding his Industrial eolonv In
California, Caryll said it numbered mem

of many members of a "baby farm1
colony who were with him in Denver in

company and were dug on their ranch
in the early fall and hauled here to be
pitted and to bo near the shipping
point There were none frozen and very

BOND ISSUE AUTHORIZED
FOR TILLAMOOK SCHOOL
Tillamook, Or., Feb. 13. At a school
meeting Saturday, the local school
board was authorized to erect a fire
proof high school building, to cost 326,
000. The building Is to be located on
ground adjacent to the present school
site, which the board was also author
ized to purchase. It Is to be designed
with a capacity of 250 pupils but so ar
ranged that addlttonsmay be built. An
issue of 335,000 in bonds was also au
thorized to cover the cost of the build
ing and site. An effort will be made
to enlarge the school district
School attendance has Increased rap
idly In the past few years. Since last
September the board has been using
the local opera house for the fifth,
sixth and seventh grades.
