W. M. . Killingsworth. the veteran
Portland realty, operator, accompanied
by his wife and daughters, has recent
ly returned from a two months' sight
seeing tour, throughout the east Mr.
Killingsworth went east via the Cana
dian route, making short stops at all
points of Interest between Vancouver,
B. C. and New York.
"We visited a great many places of
historical Interest," said Mr. Killings-
worth.-"including Bunker Hill, Concord,
and Lexington, the home of Louisa Ol-
cott In fact there Is very little we did
not see of the old hlstorlo records of
the building of -the nation. Including
George Washington's hpme at Mount
Vernon.
"One thing impressed me more than
everything else on my trip Is the tre
mendous development of New York city
In the past 21 years.
Wonderful Tunnels. '
"I was last in New Tork In 1891, and
at that time the tallest building In the
city was the World' building, which
they .were Just completing, and that
structure today Is scarcely a third'
class building. There was just one
bridge connecting Brooklyn and New
Tork then, and now there are three.
The tunnels underneath the city and
the rivers are marvelous staggering
to one who is unaccustomed to such
wonderful developments.
M have been more or less skeptical
during the past three or four years
when returning Portlanders would tell
us that Portland Is the whole thing In
the east, but I found out back there
myself that it is true. Everywhere I
went I found that Portland was more
favorably mentioned than any other
coast city. I account for this largely
because of the fact that the Portland
newspapers have continually put be
fore the reading public of the world
the astonishing facts connected with
the building development or this city,
the real estate activity, and the mar
velous increases from month to month
and from year to year in our bank
clearings and our postal receipts.
"The railroad development in tnu
community is also responsible for the
good opinion that easterners have' of
us. Portland cannot be too grateful
to James J. Hill for his Invasion of
this western country and the conse
quent stirring Into life and activity of
the old Harriman system, has been a
great agency in the upbuilding of Ore
gon and its metropolis.
Portland's Ore at Fa tore.
"I found the people in New Tork and
other parts of the east unusually well
Informed as to our climatic conditions
and our large undeveloped acreage. I
met hundreds of people who are desir
ous of coming to the Paciflo coast and
I predict a big Influx of easterners to
this state this year. These people be
lieve that with the opening of the Pan
ama canal the industrial life of the
Paclfia northwest will take on - a de
velopment little short of phenomenal.
I returned borne with greater con
fidence than I ever had before In the
development of Oregon, with 10 times
more assnrance than ever before, of the
solid substantial growth of the city of
Portland and of the fact that I have
many times stated in the past' that
Portland would become the largest city
on the Pacific coast the New Tork of
the Pacific. It is well known to the
old residents at least, that for the past
25 years I have - firmly believed that
Greater Portland was destined to be
located between the rivers, and I come
back from my trip to the east more
convinced than ever that within a few
years the harbor of. this city will be
located on the Columbia river."-
