MASTER SEES BIG
CHANGE IN CITY

Twenty-ntna years make a Wit change
In the appearance of most places and
Portland's harbor is, no cceptlon,
thinks Captain H. E. Hutchenson, master
of the British steamer Fltpatriok now
loading wheat for the United Kingdom,
who was here -on his first voyage that
long ago s second mate of the British
shir John 6. Gaunt. ' '
This is Captain Hutchenson'a second
voyage to this port and a few days ago
he dropped into the Merchants Exchange
where he Intered Into conversation with
E. W. Wright, head of the institution.
In the course of the talk the captain
mentioned that he had been here once
before in the Gaunt and Mr, Wright
looking: her up in his reoords found that
she sailed from here with a cargo of
1600 tons of flour for Liverpool on No
vember 4, 1882, reaching her destina
tion in 124 days, She made the pas
sage from Newcastle, Australia, to As
toria.with coal that year in 48 days.
At that time Captain Hutchenson was
a mere boy although he was second
mate of the Gaunt and he says that
when he reached port this voyage he
Id not see a familiar sight in tne nar-
bor. Of course he made many ports
after his first voyage here and with
the changes that have taken place in
J9 years ho would not be likely to re-

Another grain carrier that has fin
ished is the British bark Crocodile, un
der charter to M. H. Houser, which went
to the stream last night and will prob
ably clear this afternoon. She has 143,
038 bushels of wheat valued at $124,
443. for the United Kingdom .or, ord
ers. OCEANIC COMPANY ACTIVE
Concern to Have 13 Hailing Dates
Each Year It Is Forecasted.
Washington, Dee. 22. Resumption of
activity by the Oceanic Steamship com
pany, with 13 sailings annually and car
rying United Htates malls from San
Francisco to Sydney, Australia, via
Honolulu and Samoa, was forecasted
here today by a conference at the White
House, in which the officials of the
abandoned steamship line, owned by the
Kpreckels Interests, asked for a renewal
of their former mall contracts wtth the
government.
Tha line's officials have planned to
use oil burners In their vessors, baying
that they can reduce expenses and make
profit. .
