Lass at Los Angeles Says 600
Girls Are for Sale at $500
per Head.
(United Pij-m .aaitil IVIre.l J
Ix)s Angeles, Dec. 21. In Judge Wll
bur's court here little Elsie Navikoff, a
pretty Russian girl barely out bt the
Pinafore stage. Is on record with the
declaration that in the local Russian
colony with a population of 3000 there
are C00 girls for sale at an average
price of 1500 each. Shaking with the
Intensity of her feelings, Elsie over and
over again flung the denials of her own
parents and those of other Runsian pa
triarchs back Into their teeth. Then
pointing at her aged father, she cried:
"You have sold me for J500 to a man I
have never seen! I love an American,
and he loves me, and we will be married
Just as soon as we can get away from
mjr people."
While her American sweetheart, Ray
ner Hollock, a youn naval officer,
stood beside her, Elsie declared she
would not relinquish him for the Strang
er to whom she declares her parents
were trying to sell her.
"Six weeks ago," said the girl, "poor
little Sarah Katawa, only 15 years old,
was sold to a man she had never seen.
Her parents put long dresses on. her and
with a white veil on her head she was
sent to the altar. She looks like an old
Woman now.
"Then there was Stella Marcha, only
16. She was sold to an old man with a
dirty beard for $700.' She U simply mis
erable and is Robbing her life away."
Miss Navlkoff was arrested for delin
quency alter she had fled from her own
home and taken refuge in that of her
sweetheart's mother. In view of the
girl's sensational testimony, Judge Wil
bur continued the case until January 2,
.so that a full Investigation can be made.
