that with lew than one-third of the
work completed, the contractor' five
monster electric pumps of the capacity
of one-third the city's water supply,
havd been reduced to worthless scrap,
necessitating the cessation for the past
SO days of, all excavating work to allow
the plant to be completely rebuilt.
Though constructed of heavy cast
iron, the sides of these pumps have In
places been reduced almost to the thin
ness of paper through the action of
and and grit carried by the water
taken from Guild lake, There Is, never
theless, a remarkable record behind
these pumps In that thev have with
stood' the Immense strain of running
continuously day and night since April,
1910 a period of 18 months supplying
very 24 hours 3,000,000 gallons of wa
ter to the hydraulic giants that eat
away, wash down and reform the level
terraces.
Up to the present the portion of the
i hills that have been removed is repre
sented by the huge figure of 1.250.00O

first section of 75 building sites upon
s which 100 men have been employed for
the past four or five weeks, In adding
the landscape features, trimming, the
slopes, preparing for grass and giving
to the cliff-like uprising between the
tiers a picturesque parklike effect
through the setting out of much shrub
bery. Gravel driveways have also been
formed and temporary sidewalks pro
vided in advance of the requirements of
the purchasers who plan to begin the
construction of residences next spring.
As regards the hard surfacing of the
streets and the laying of sidewalks, pe
titions for this work, it Is stated, have
heen filed wtth the city authorities, as
also have petitions for the sewers and
water and gas mains. This latter work
la to be completed, it is said, during the
present winter months, so as to insure
the paving being started in the spring.
Much -Interest continues to be taken
daily In the work, now resumed, by the
Hydraulic giants, and especially on Sun
days It is usual for several hundred vis
itors to witness the Impressive sight, as
large vertical sllts are cut off the hill-
sine of solid gravel from 30 feet to 60
feet In height and carried for almost
mile over the high trestle and deposited
in Uulld lake.

One of the big real estate deals con
summated during the week was the
sale of a half Interest in the Common
wealth building, at Sixth and Ankeny
streets, on a corner opposite the site
for the new public market, by Messrs.
Leadbetter and Plttock, to J. R. Rob
ertson of London, England. The den I
was made on the basis of $$00,000 for
the property.
The Commonwealth building was
erected several years ago by the firm
of Snell, Heltshu ft Woodard as the
home of a wholesale mercantile busi
ness. About five years ago It was re
modeled under the direction of Percy
Blyth, of the real estate firm of Rus
set ft Blyth, Into an office building.
Mr. Robertson and Mr. Blyth came
over from England together a short
time ago. Mr. Blyth is settling up his
affairs fn connection with his firm and
expects to leave with his brother, F.
L,. Ireland Blyth and Mr. Robertson,
next Thursday for England.
A deal was also closed In which Mr.
Blyth took over the undivided Interest
of the Russell estate In the Willamette
Heights property, giving him full pos-

Local Investors have procured a long
time lease on the quarter block at the
northwest corner of East Thirty-fourth
and Belmont streets, located In the heart

During the past week the finishing
touches were put on the new five story
hotel st the northwest corner of East
Sixth and Morrison streets. This Is a
