When th British steamer Hallopolla
aalla for home tomorrow morning, Le
Drricka and Christian Tasper, tha two
West Indian atowaways who hid aboard
her at Bt. Thomaa and are now held In
this city will not go with her st least
not on tha trip down the Columbia riv
er.
Attorney Will H. Bmtth for Beckman
tt Smith, acting for William Eisen, for
mer Danish consul, filed a petition for
a writ of habeas corpus for tha boys
today. Tha writ waa mad returnable
at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon and the
stowaways will bs produced In court at
that time. Captain Martin of the He.ll-
opolls, whom the boys nay abused them,
will take his vessel to Astoria tomor
row and appear in court Monday after
noon to show cause why his company
should not send tha boya overland to
New York and thenco to St. Thomba in
the Danish West Indies.
Tha petition recites that tha boys
were taken from St. Thomaa by th Hell-
opolls and that the Immigration laws
say aliens not admlssabi to the United
States must ba returned to their homes
by the vessel bringing them, if practic
able. It Is claimed that It would not
be practicable for the boys to go aboard
the Heliopolis, aa' she is bound for Eng
land and may never reach St. Thomas
again. It recites that therefore the
owners of the vessel should send the
boys home by way of New York, at th
company expense.
Portland haa no Danish consul but
Dr. Eisen was the last to act In that
capacity here, and with the sympathy
and fcupport of Danish societies In Port
land, tbe petition for a writ of habeas
corpus was brought Bt. Thomas is a
Danish possession, - though the boys
speak and writ excellent English, as do
most of the natives or these islands.
