t ' . - i THE OREGQy DAILY JOURNAL; PORTLAND. WEDNESDAY EVENING. SEPTEMBER 6, 1911. 1F1REIE 2 INTEREST IS LOST Constituents;' Now Believe if Coke Erred, He Did So in' ; Good Conscience. Upright Grand Piano 7 Gold Watch Uth FrU. , COKE RECALL DEAD Be ' (Special to The Journal.! ' Roseburg. Or.,, Sept. The move ment for the recall of Judge Coke, which was Instigated shortly after tho McClallen murder trial last May, seems to have lost Interest. Although short ly after the movement was started It was the sole toplo of discussion in this part of the state. It is now seldom men. tloned and is probably discussed more In Portland than here. Judson King, who was here recently investigating the recall, found that, while many believe Judge Coke erred, it was considered a conscientious blun der without ulterior motive, therefore not a case that would Justify a re call. A large percentage of the citi zens of this district nave taken this attitude. The work of circulating the petitions has been temporarily suspended be cause of the illness of Attorney E. L. Cannon, who is managing the cam paign. Mr. Cannon has been confined to his bed for some time with typhoid fever. It is said the petitions' contain about 1000 signatures at present.- Over 4000 signatures are required before an elec tion can be called. Lack of funds with which to circulate the petitions, it is said, is not the cause of the present In activity, but the movement seems Just to 'have lost interest. The excitement from the McClallen trial having died down, the people have had time to think the matter over thor. oughly, and have apparently decided that the recall is not Justified in this case. Club Women Prepare Program. (Special t Tb Journal.) Roseburg, Or., Sept. 6. The visiting delegates to the annual convention of the State Federation of Women's clubs, which will be held in Roseburg, October 17, 18 and 19, will be well entertained if the present plans of the women of Roseburg are carried out. The women have outlined a general program of en tertainment, and appointed committees to have charge of the arrangements for their entertainment. Indications are that the convention will be largely attended. Eastern Klickitat Grass Scaked. (flpjcll to The Journal.) Sundale, Wash., Sept. 6. A soaking rain for the past 24 hours has stopped all threshing In this part of Klickitat county. No daman is likely to occur and great good tn pastures will follow. With .76 of an inch this early In the month, compared wfth .20 In 1909, and ..22 in 1910, during the same month, the hope Is felt that the rainfall, which for three years has been light, will again return.
