'LAND, WEDNESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER . 6,-191 O ! V v- 1 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL', PORTLAND, TBAMPS 478,000 SMILES IN 14 YEARS Julius Rath. For 14 years Julius Rath, a St Louis newsboy, has been trudging over the face of the earth. He was seleoted In 1897 by the St. Louie club trom among 100 newsboys to undertake the con tract of walking 600.000 miles in 18 years. He arrived In Portland yester- day and says he has covered 478,000 miles. He has visited every large city la the- world. "I left St, Louis 14 years ego with out si penny," he said. "I had a suit of overalls, a cap, a pair of shoes and a dog. The conditions of our agreement is that I shall walk 500,000 miles in 18 years, shall neither work, beg, steal or borrow, but at the end of the 18 years I must return with $1000 In cash. If I am successful I am to get $30,000. "I am two years ahead of my sched nlep'out what is worrying me is how to get the $1000. I only have $300 BOW." Bath says he has never attended school a day in his life. When asked If be was- not anxious to get back to his old home he replied: "Yes, my father has died and my brother has been killed since I left. I received word that my mother is in the hospital. But I don't suppose I will ever be contented to settle down any place. The wanderlust In me is too well cultivated." He now has with him his fifth dog, four others having worn themselves out tramping. The dog was given him by an Eskimo at Cape Nome, Alaska, Xn each city he visits he is required to secure the signatures of the mayor, elty clerk and chief of police. He has filled 251 books with these signatures Among the notables who have riven him their signatures are Queen Vic toria, King Edward, the late President McKlnley and ex-President Roosevelt, and Admiral Togo. He has filled 600 books with the events of his life which have been sent to the board of education of Washing ton. D. C, to be placed on file. He has worn out 484 pairs of shoes. He expects to end his walking expe dition at San Francisco at the Panama exposition in 1916. SAYS MEN STAND TO LOSE BY STRIKING 'j. M. Davis, general superintendent of the Pacific division of the Southern Pa cific, said yesterday that he does not believe there will be a strike of men employed by the Harrlman lines. "When I came north there were no serious Indications of a strike," said Mr. Davis, who came to Portland to tes tify before Commissioner Franklin K. Lane of the Interstate commerce com mission In the Southern Pacific rate cases. "The best reason why there should not be and probably will not be a strike of the men on our lines is that we pay now a higher wage scale than Is paid almost anywhere else. '1 have never believed there would be a strike, because I believe the men stand to be more injured than the rail road."
