Campaign Material Mads. ,
The Demoeratlo leaders were -enthusiastic
over the campaign material that
they have fashioned from the happen
ings at ths extra session. . A great
scheme of tariff revision, which the
Democrats declared would, cut down the
tariff tav an h American neoDle has
crumbled to dust under the power of
tha president s veto, Keciprocny w,m
Canada was the only reason given by
the president for 'convening the extra
session on March 16. .
Ten ' Democratic tariff bills, one re
vising the wool schedule, another plac
ing meat and bread on the free list,
have been lost In the shuffle. A third
revising the cotton tariffs, will also
die aborning. Two of them, the wool
bill and free list bill, the president has
vetoed. The Democrats made ineffect
ual attempts to pass them over the
veto. The other is In a base of technical
defeat between the 1 sens te and ths house.
Coalition Helped Democrats.
SA combination of Democratic and In
surgent Republicans, .led by Senator La
Toilette (Rep. Wis.) In the senate, en
abled the house Democrats to put their
tariff bills through that body in some
semblance of their original shape. But
the combination exploded at the last
minute and only the complaisance of the
stand pat Republicans allowed passsge
of the cotton bill, to which were at
tached revisions of the iron and steel
schedule, the chemical schedule, the cot
ton machinery schedule and an amend
ment providing for free coal from Can
ada. The declaration-of the president that
he will sign no tariff bills until the
tariff board reports on them, put a
damper on the tariff revision ardor of
the Democrats.
A bill providing for the direct election
of senators by the people will be left in
conference between the- two houses when
congress adjourns.
The house passed It end the senate
amended it.
Plans Progress for Celebration
of Century of Peace Among
English Speaking People.
London, Aug. 21. To celebrate the
centenary of peace among English
speaking people, as marked by the sign
ing of the peace treaty between Eng
land and America in 1815, an Important
scheme for a permanent memorial Is
being discussed In London by repre
sentative men of both nations. Andrew
Carnegie is chairman of the American
committee, with Colonel Theodore Roos
evelt as honorary chairman, and the
governors of 46 states of the Union as
honorary vice presidents.
The celebration will take place In
1914-15, and will most probably take
the form of either (1) purchasing Sul
grave Manor, Northamptonshire, the an
cestral seat of the Washington family,
aa a lasting memorial of the peace and
a center of Interest for all the Anglo
Saxon race: or (2) Jno building of a
bridge across the Niagara. Falls, con
necting British and American territory,
and to be toll free to citizens of both
nations.' Possibly, If funds permit, both
chimes may be realised, so that each

Mr. William B. Howiana, chairman oi
he International Organisation commlt
ee, now in London, said to a reporter:
mtmORiAL UB
"A decision will DC arrivea at prooauiy
before ths end of the year. Ws have
approached the owner of- the Sulgrave
estate with a view to securing an op
tion on reasonable terms. I think the
Idea would be to devote the house to
the purposes of a museum, for the
housing Of objects and documents In
dicating ths close snd peaceful rela
tions between the two countries, and
to lay out ihe 200 acres of land, or
part of It, as an International park.
"The proposed bridge across Niagara.
Falls would be a grand connecting link
between, the two shores. Ths new struc
tuie would be free to all passengers,
and as there are thousands of British
visitors during the yearhls form of
memorial would be of some benefit to
. them. We shall seek to get In touch
with English ' people who are willing
to cooperate In the celebration, and It
'' la likely that a British committee will
be formed In connection with, the larger
project. .
"There will , be a series of public
. gatherings in America, England, Canada
and Australia. An Influential commit
tee will be organised In Canada and
Australia and probably In all the Brit
ish colonies. A conference of the ln
terests ''will most likely be convened In
New York In the autumn. - --
'There has. been no hostility along
- ths 3000 miles of American-Canadian
- border during the last ' 100 years, so
that the celebration will assuredly evoke

Hood River ; United Brethren
Pastor Tells Why HeWon't
Go to Methodists. '
v v ":,m"' c,s
' ' . (Special to The Journal.)
Hood. River, .Or., Aug. ,21. Rev. Mr.
Parsons, pastor of the Hood River
United Brethren- church, preached a ser
mon on church union- yesterday, ana laid
down the rule upon -which the ' local
church would unite with the Methodist
church In Hood River. . The preacher
said he had been confronted With ap
peals to unite v ever since he had been
pastof of .the Hood "River church, but
that the i United Brethren church In
HoodTRlver would never disband. He
said It was the ' first ' church la Hood
River, that it had built a gymnasium
for the young men ami Installed a pub
llo library, thereby showing that it had
been fulfilling its full mission to the
community as a church, and that It had
Tip reasons for -quitting now.'
" He said, however, he would be In fa
vor of havlngUhe Methodists unite with
It, as they had come here after the
United Brethren church had been built,
and. In return would favor the erection
of a Methodist church .on Hood River
Heights and would urge all the United
Brethren members on the Heights and
In the country to unite with that church.
Rev. Parsons- said ths United Brethren
church In the United States had been
the pioneer In ; the advocacy pf church
union, and that he- greatly deplored
the multiplicity of churches In the small
cities. However, be urged 'the priority
of his ohurch here, and held to the prin
ciple that the United Brethren church
had a first right to maintain Its Identity
as a church In -case of a union of
the Methodist and United ' Brethren
churches. . ,
"Docile" Hone Runs Away Twice.
Centralis, . Wash., Aug. 21. Mrs.
Myrtle Cameron, a resident of Lincoln
Creek, purchased a .supposedly docile
horse a week ago, but has experienced
her. second runaway since owning the
animal, the second time narrowly escaping-with
her life. The hors overturned
the'buggy, precipitating Mrs. Cameron
into the roadway and causing severe
injuries. Mrs. Cameron -. was -visiting
her-brother, Clarke Davis, in Centralis,
at the time of the accident, and Mr.
Davis threatens to procesute the man
who sold his sister the, animal.
