proposed j sale of the ; Boston- Rational
baseball club have become almost cer
tain, here today, aa the result of a con
ference held here by William R. Russell,
owner of the club, with Ned Hanlon,
former manager of the Brooklyn, Balti
more and Cincinnati clubs. It Is under
stood that Hanlon made a proposition
to Rnssoa Immediately following the
eonferance Russell left for Boston to
reach, a final understanding with the
other stockholders of the club,

lars is the prise to be awarded by a"
London newspaper to the winner of the
1000 mile aeroplane race around the
British isles, which will start tomorrow.
The aviators must finish before Au
gust 6, and the course Is as follows:
Bropklands to Hendon, 20 miles; Hen
don, via Carlisle and Manchester, to
Edinburgh', . 343 miles; Edinburgh, via
Stirling, Glasgow, Carlisle and Man
chester to Bristol. 883 miles; Bristol,
via Exeter, to Brighton. 214 miles, and
Brighton to Brooklands, 40 miles.
Ardle's aingle scored the Beal'a. first
run. They made another In the sixth
with two down on Bhaw's walk and
singles by Vitt and Schmld. Browning
also walked, filling the bases, but Hen
kle tightened 'up and fanned Powell. It
was hla turn to bat next for the Beavers
and Koestner took his place at the plate.
Mohlor opened the seventh with a
single to center, took third on MoArdle's
single to right and raced home on
Weaver'a Infield ' hit to Koestner and
McKune. The next three up were outs.
With Peck a fanout, Kuhn bounced
one -over Vltt's head, took second on
Koestner's aingle to right and scored
on Chadbourne'a third single, this time
across aecond. Sheehan made-the third

By playing brilliant tennis through
every ono of their three straight seta,
C, E. Foley, the San Francisco star, and
Jack Lewis of Multnomah, defeated
Ewlng and Andrews this, morning, 8-1,
6-1, g-3. The score does not reveal the
splendid game put up by Ewlng and
Andrews, but playing their best, they
were no. match for the sensational Call
fornlan and the steady young- Port
lander. By their visitory this morning
Foley .and Lewis are the winners of the
tournament and will meet Corrill and
Wlekersham tomorrow afternoon in the
challenge round for the Multnomah ,club
doubles championship cup.
Wlekersham and Gorrlll "are the
northwestern championship, doubles
team and naturally they arefavorltes,
but they will be put to some hard play
ing to bea,t Foley and Lewis, who seem
to be harmoniously paired-in almost
every department of the game. -The
coming doubles match should bo one
of the most Interesting aver seen on
a local court " ;

tle, Wash., made C. E. Foley and Levfis
extend themselves in the semi-finals of
the men's doubles at tha Oregon State
Tennis association yesterday and th
match required 49 games before Foley
and Lewla could defeat the pair efrom
Seattle. .
The match .went live sets. Mccuten-
eon and Richardson won tha first set
8-1: the second and third sets were In
favor of Foley and Lewis by score of
7-5 and 8.3. The fourth set was won
by Richardson and McCutcheon, 8-3, and
Foley and Lewis earned the right to ap
pear in the finale 9agatbst Ewlng and
Andrews by winning the fifth set, 7-5.
The next match in importance was
the one in which Shives, a local player,
triumphed over McCutcheon in the semU
finals by winning three straight sets,
7-6. 9-7, 8-8.. Shives made several fine
strokes and won the final set by driving
the ball to the right side of the court
Just out of the reach of his opponent.
McCutcheon appeared rresn at the ena
of the match despite the fact that he
had played a large number of games
throughout the day.

Miss Kilner defeated Miss Leadbetter
In two of three sets by scores-of 8-2,
3-8. S-S. Mlsa Fording and Miss Klleee
irill meet- in" ' the semi-finals ' of the
ladles' singles today and the winner
of this match will meet the winner of
the Miss Campbell-Miss Fox match,
which will be played this afternoon,
for the championship in the ladles' sin
gles tomorrow afternoon. Miss Camp
bell defeated Miss Schaefer yesterday
by the scores of 8-3, 4-6, 8-2.
Gorrlll qualified for the semi-finals
by defeating Wskeman In straight sets,
6-2, 6-4 but he was an easy victim for
Foley in ' the semi-finals and was de
feated in three straight eets. 6-0. 8-1
and 6-8. In 'the third set Gorrlll had a
three game lead, when Foley started to
play and won the set by taking six
straight games.
Miss Scbaefor and Foley defeated
Miss Campbell and Ewlng in straight
seta in the semi-finals of the mixed
doubles, 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Miss
Leadbetter and Wakeman, who defeated
Mrs. Judge and Mitchell. 6-2, 7-6, In the
finals of the mixed doubles thla after
noon at 4 o'clock. The match should
be very Interesting as Miss Leadbetter
and Wakeman have been playing: won
derful tennis and the match will no
doubt be one of the features of today's
schedule.
Emerson Has Practice.
Nat Emerson was out for practice
this morning for a while. Emerson Is
In the best of health and will give the
winner of the match between Shives
and Foley a hard fight for title to the
Flske cup.
Today's program will be the best of
the week and will no doubt equal to
morrow's program, which will end the
tournament.

land Nicks Jumped Into the '"500" class
yesterday as the result of their fourth
straight victory over the Tacoma Tlgera.
Portland and Seattle are running neck
and neck for fourth place, each having
the percentace of .600. The two teams
are but 63 points - behind the Tacoma
team, which Is resting in third place.
Testerday's win cinched, the series for
the Mcka. . '
Bloomfield and Annie pitohed good
ball, but the ragged support accorded
Annls caused tha defeat of the locals,
while Bloomfield was supported in fine
ehape.v Two double plays by his team
matns helped him , out In a couple of
Innings; .
The Nicks broke Into the" score col
umn in the first inning. Speas walked
after Stovall was out, went to second on
a wild pitch, and scored when Morse
fumbled Williams' liner. Pettlgrew sin
gled to right field, and "Abbott" kicked
the ball all over the pasture. Williams
scored and Pettlgrew was resting on
third before the ball was returned to
the Infield.

Mundorff made the third run, which
was a gift to him. He was hit by a
pitched ball, took seoond on a wild pitch
stole third, and scored when Kennedy
made an error. . .
The locals scored their run' in the
eighth Inning. Morse was safe on a
fielder's choice, and scored on a 'double
by Burns.
Mike Lynch put Ed Kennedy on first
base, in an effort to add batting
strength - to the team. Mike declares
that unlets the team Improves its play
ing there will be several changes In the
lineup.
Eddie Mensor had a Atar day at seo
ond base, taking care of 11 chances
without an error.
