To transport a cargo of 3320 short tons of general freight from Newcaatle-on-Tyne to Portland, the French bark Charles Gounod, 1717 tons net. Captain HeurteL has been fixed by Balfour, Guthrie ft Co. She sailed from San Francisco for Hull on January 14 and after discharging at the latter port she will proceed to the Tyne to load for this port direct. Sh will bs due- to arrive her for tha coming wheat season, but she has not been chartered for ths outward voyage, and according to M. H. Houser there Is no need of any of the exporters getting excited over ships yet Mr. Houser has just returned from a week's trip by automobile through eastern Washington from' Pendleton to Connell, and he says that there is the foundation of a good crop, but all the spring seeding is extremely late. He says that there la more spring seeding this year than there was fall seeding, because of the fear of the farmers of the Jim Hill mustard, which chokes out the wheat. Hot winds along about the first of July, In connection with the late seeding, may injure the crop, thinks Mr, Houser. 7n some parts of the Palo use coun try, aays Mr. Houser, there Is much rejoicing among the wheat growera as a peat In the shape of a worm Is at work on .the mustard and by eating out the roots of the plant kills it. The worm does not touch the wheat, how ever, which adds to the rejoicing. He says that the peat was more noticeable in the southeastern parte of Whitman and Franklin counties.
