An air of mystery has surrounded
Beck ever since his arrival at the Na
tional factory. Tall, clean cut and well
bred, be became at once a favorite
among the testers. No Job was too un
pleasant for Beck, as long as - some
where in 'the future he could picture
himself at the wheel of a big blue Na
tional, a string of cars behind and the
checkered flag ahead.
From a pampered son of luxury to
an under test car driver la a far cry,
But the lure of the speed game, the
throbbing engines, the flying cars, the
call of the open exhaUst reached Beck
at his horn In the east A family
miundratandlng broke the only tie
that held him back. Time arter time
he applied to th National factory for a
place on the race team. 'Time after
time he was refused. Tha team was
full up. At last with no promise thst
he would ever be allowed to drive, and
only with the knowledse that usually
race drlvera are recruited from the test
leg department he went to work In the

Day after day, all through the win
ter. Beck has taken out National ,40's
for the thorough grind of the final test
Whether or not in his mind he pictured
himself in ' the '' big race, he never
flinched. Wind, rain," sleet and anow
did not prevent him from completing
his task. But all this time he wss
familiarising himself with every lncn
of the speedway course. As a result
Beck Is putting the Nattonal 40 stock

Oregon and eastern Oregon by auto

ton men are making. They are I.-W.
Busby, OHle Oeddis and A. F. Currier
of BUenaburg. Before returning home
they will go over Into eastern Oregon
and Washington and down' the 8nake
river from Ontario. The trip wilt last
from six weeks to two months and will
cover, close to 1000 miles 'In all. The

launched th four-state tour for Hoo
sler cars at a meeting hld In this city
last night, accepted the plans aa pre
viously' formulated, adopted a tentative
routs, subject to changes by a patnnnd

for Wfcdnday, July IS.
Enthusiasm for th event was marked
and with 48 manufacturer In the stats,
many of whom have promised from
three to five entries. It would not be
surprising to have as many as 7S cars,
which will start westward to show the
people of four states that Indiana not
only makes many cars, dux mai mey
are cars of quality. Many auggeatlons
were offered for th consideration of
the committees and It wss evident that
the Indiana makers Intend to work to
gether in promoting this most unique
event.

this city about noon of Jury IS and will
reach St Louis for a Sunday stop on
Saturday night, visiting an routs Terre
Haute, Bloomington, Peoria, Spring
field, and other nltlea. During the wek
of -July 17 the caravan will proceed
northward along tha west banks of the
Mississippi river as far as Dvowpie,

City Motor club of Philadelphia, Sat
urday, April St.- The field numbered
63 entries, and L. I. Berger, president
of the club, won ths event handily with
a Columbia.
Ths run was from Philadelphia te
Atlantic City. N. J., 78 miles, and the
allowed time waa 8 hours, 46 minutes,
It seconds. Ths Columbia car finished
just 34 seconds behind this arbitrary
advance aoheduls. Th schedule was ar
rived at by averaging the times estimat
ed by Mayor Reybum of Philadelphia
