was the assertion of on of tha largest
buyers of whest this morning. Tha
same Interest places the amount of
wneat in tne bands or miners and deal
ers at 1,600,000 buahels, making total
holdings of the cereal In Oregon, Idaho
and Washington 6,000,000 bushels.
This Is the smallest amount of wheat
estimated in tha hand of local lntereata
to date this season but the figures are
now considered approximates correct
by the trade ln general.
Wheat mrket is excited ss a result
of the scarcity of stocks and bids for
club are being made as high ss 84986o
a bushel, basis track delivery. Portland.
Bid for bluestem range trom 89O0o
a bushel but it Is now believed that No.
1 milling can be secured even In small
lota under the -higher figure.
Wheat Is held la strong hands at this
time and even the more bearish of the
millers say they are not able to secure
supplies except at higher prices.
As exclusively forecast by by The
Journal a week ago. the price of patent
flour was advanced 20o a barrel here
today, following a similar movement of
prices In the north.
Oats and barley markets are firm with
no general change In the situation.
Mlllstuffs are firm and prices hav
been advanced 60c a ton from the low
mark.

Opening With Loss.
Chicago, April 21. Rally of bear
forces in the wheat pit failed today.
After opening lower the market closed
with a small advance over yesterday.
Opening of the wheat trade was at a
decline of to c a bushel, compared
with yesterday's closing, with May at
89c, July 87c and September 86 o.
News from abroad was mixed, and
market cables wore with few axceotlons
ln a similar state.
Minneapolis advice says that millers
were good bidders of the better quality
wheat at 2 to 3o above the May for
No. 1 northern, while Inferior stock was
dull. With one exoeption millers re
ported a slow riour trade.
