Why Is western Oregon destined to be the home of the small farmert
Because of the wonderful fertility of its soil, men are learning that more
money Is to be made, from the proper cultivation of 10 acres than used to
be made from tfje haphazard cultivation of half a section. Men naw find
that the1 can grow rich off the proceela of 10 or 20 acres, when they form
crly grew poorer by trying to take care of 10 times the area.
Thin Is why the Willamette valley and especially that portion of it con
tiguous to Portland, Is so rapidly filling up with the small land holder.
Ten years ago; less than 60 men owned practically all of ttia wonderful Tu
alatin valley now, there are no lesa than 1000 separate land owners In that
favored section. .
Ten-years ago, one could hardly interest a resident of Portland In email
ereage now there are hundreds of Portlands who are Inveatlng their
monthly savings In small tracts of land located within a radius of 60 miles
or the city. And wise they are to do It It will make them Independent and
their children rich.
Land la the only imperishable property that man pbsaeases. All wealth
originates in the solt, hence the man who tills the soil approaches nearest
to absolute independence.
Dr. James Wlthyconbe, who haa made the agricultural possibilities of
Oregon his life study and has devoted Special attention to the small farm,
recently delivered a lecture at the Portland ,T. M. C. A., on the "possi
bilities of a small farm," In which he predicted that Oregon agriculture
will be ultimately characterized by Its small farms Intensively cultivated.
In this lecture Dr. Wlthycombe said that a good living can be made on
10 acres and suggested the following rules for handling such a farm:
In a general way one acre should be utilized for the buildings, lawn and
home garden; four acres should be devoted to the growing of hay for. the
livestock. ' For western Oregon conditions this hay should be mainly clover.
Four acres of good clover should yield 16 tons of hay and furnish one
month's pasture. One "acre of tree fruits, comprising early fall and winter
varieties of apples, Bartlett and Winter pears. If the land is sandy, peaches
may also be Included. One acre of small fruits and vegetables; one acre of
potatoes, two acres for growing, summer forage and winter succulent feed
for the cows. One acre of this shoull be planted to corn to be fed green
after the clover pasture Is done. Tho remaining acre should be planted one
half to kale and a fourth to mangels and a fourth to winter rye and vetch
for early apring cutting. This series of crops should furnish, under good
cultural methods, sufficient; green feed and hay for four cows and one
horse for one yesr.
The gross returns from this system of farming should be approximate
ly as follows:
Butter fat, 1100 pounds at 82 cents per pound, $362; 24,000 pounda of skim
milk at SO cents per hundredweight, 872. This Is estimating the food value
for poultry, hogs or calves. Eggs from 200 hens, 2000 dozen at 28c per
dozen, $660; potatoes, $100; fruit, $260; vegetables, $76; total gross Income,
$1409.
Expenditures Feed for poultry, $200; five and one half tons of grain
and mill feed for horse and cows at $28 per ton, $164; four tone of straw,
at $5 per ton, $20. Total cost of feed and bedding, $374, thus leaving a bal
ance on the right side of the ledger of $1036.
