REVENUES JF STATE
(Special Dtmattih to The Journal)
Salem, Or, Feb. 16. While much of
the time of the legislature during the
few remaining days will be occupied
.Jtoltlu.appnprlaU
perhaps $4,000,000 of the state's money
shall be spent, a search for revenue re
ducing measures reveals a great scarcer
In that line. ' .
The mortgage tax bin was the meas
ure of greatest promise in the revenue
raising line, but the prospects for its
passage are now exceedingly'' dim. it
has net come from committee in the
house, and the lobby of the opposing
corporation Interests are certain it will
be unfavorably reported. Its friends no
longer (profess confidence that it'Wtll
win. ' '") - . n ,
This leaves the Beals bill, increasing
tne tax on gifts, legacies ana Vcherl
tances, at the head of the list Its
author says $70,000 a year is the least
It may be expected to Increase, ti
revenues, and he thinks $100,000 may be
adKed to the treasury by its passage.
The bill was approved by the house yes-..
teraay and now resrta In 'the senate.
.Next to this Is the' auto license meas
ure, which the secretary of state's office
estimates will bring In from $80,000 to
$75,000 in two years. This was passed
by the.house yesterday.
There are some minor measures that
will bring in a few thousand dollars
each. Senator Bean's bill relating to
trade marks' he estimates' will produce
$5000 In two years,-and Senator Wood's
bill authorising the sale of a tract of
land in Marion county held by theasy
lum will -j)ut at least $4200 In the gen
eral fund if the tract is saleable, for It
cannot be sold for less. . ....
