lowing Remarkable Run of
Six Days From Frisco; Ger
man Ship Sails Today.
On her second voyage to this port In
less than a year, the French bark
Bossuet, 1951 tons net register. Captain
Le Troquer, arrived from Ban Fran
cisco at Astoria yesterday noon after
an unusually good run of six days, aid
ed by the southeast gales. 8hs will
load wheat here for the United King
dom for the Northwest Warehouse com-

bart, more than a year ago the Bossuet
has covered approximately 30,000 miles

After discharging her lumber cargo
she loaded a cargo of coal at Newcastle
for Ban Francisco, from which port
she has Just arrived. It is expected
r '4 that she will reach Llnnton tomorrow
'to discharge her ballast .
A Portland bound cargo: vessel which
has been out a long time from her
starting point is the French ship Mare
chal de Castries. 1741 tons net. Captain
Amellne having left Dublin for this
port 198 days ago with general cargo
for Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Before
reaching Cape Horn she met with dis
aster and on September 24 was towed
into Beef Harbor, In the Falkland
Islands, with sundry damages and her
cargo shifted. 1 t
After making repairs at Reef Harbor
she sailed for Hobart on November 29.
She sailed from that port for the Co
lumbia river January 10. t
The German ship Wilhelmine, 180Q
v tons net. Captain Thomson, was sched
uled to sail today, from San Pedro for
" this port. , She is laden with general
cargo and Is from Antwerp on the Hen
ry Lund & Co. line of ships.
JETTY HAS GOOD WtNTEB
Heavy Gales of Past Wek Have
Washed Out Only One PHe. ,
So far this winter only one pile had
been washed out of the outer end of the
Columbia river Jetty, and the" Jetty has
remained practically undamaged by the
very heavy gales of the past week, ac
cording to Information received at the
offices of the United States engineers.
This Is unusual, as the'waves In past
years have done considerable minor

north Jetty, and this will probably .be

It Is proposed also to utilize the
spring at that point for supplying water

will work automatically, and will be
run au me time, so that vessels can
take water quickly.
ESCAPES DROWNING
Workman at Bridge Pier Rescned by
His Fellow Employes.
While an attempt was being made to
move some drift from the east draw
pier of the new Steel bridge last night
one, of the men at work on the drift
fell into the river. Fortunately he was
caught In the mass and did not go in
beyond his armpits. He was pulled out
Of his precarious position and placed
aboard the launch Eva.
The Eva and a gang of men wer kent
busy at the pier all night kepnlna it
ciear or me aruung pieces of drift that
came floating down the river with the
swift current but after 12 o'clock, says
Captain Charles" Amos, master of tho
Eva, the drift practically stopped run
ning" and this morning the river was
comparatively clear.
While engaged in towing masses of
drift away from the draw pier last
night. Captain Amos picked up a coat
and Jumper, the latter being caught in
the wheel of the Eva. He reported the
matter to the harbor police, who are
Inclined to believe that they belong to
some person who has been drowned
farther up the river.

afternoon. The Balmoral was towed up
from Llnnton to Montgomery dock No.
2 last night and she will begin loading
wheat there Monday morning.
The British ship Celtlo Glen, Captain
Roberts, reached Llnnton this morning
In tow of the Ocklahama and was taken
immediately in to the ballast dock,
where she will discharge ballast and
mo before coming up here to load
wheat

Schooner Alvena Discharges 200,000
' v Feet Into the Pacific.
Reports to the Merchants' Exchange
from San Francisco state that the
schooner Alvena arrived there at 6
o'clock last night and reports the loss of
200,000 feet of her deckload In a south
east gale off the Columbia river January
9. The Alvena sailed from Astoria Jan
uary 8 with a cargo of oyer 900,000
feet of lumber, bound for San Pedro and
was caught In the heavy gale that blew
the next day off the coast.

ured some depth of the Willamette as
he fell from the dock and was nearly
carried under. No one saw him fall,
but he wandered Into the office and told
the agent.1 t W. Brown, " that he ',
had fallen in and was carried down
nearly to the end of. the dock before be
could get his bearings. He soon found
them, however, according to ns siory
to the agent,- and breasting the rapid ,
current, swam nacic to ine point inun
which he had fallen and there gained
the dock. ' In support of his story that
he had been in the river were his soaked
clothes.

OfflcUls Say It Will Be Hard to Meet
port of Portland Cut. 1 -Because
bf the cut of 60 per cent in
the. Port of Portland drydock rates, of
ficials of the Oregon drydock seem to
be of the opinion that that structure
will be put out of business as they con
tend that it will be impossible for them
to meet the rates of the larger struc
ture and continue on a paying basis.
Concessions made by the private dock
are said to have been responsible for
the cutting of the rates on the Port
of Portland dock. ' -

the pilots said this morning that even

Llghtvessel No. 92, which broke" loose
from her moorings several days ago
was returned to her station off Uma

Laden with 25,000 barrels of oil, the
Standard Oil company's tank steamer
Asuncion arrived at Portsmouth last
night from San Francisco.
Officials of the Oregon City Trans
portation company expect to get thp
steamer Pomona started for Oregon City
tomorrow, In view of the fact that the
river is falling. The Oregona which is
operating above Corvallis is expected
to come down through the locks next
Tuesday on her regular schedule.
With passengers and freight the
steamer Alliance, Captain Thomsen, will
sail tonight for Coos Bay and Eureka.
This will be her first trip since coming
off tho drydock.
When she sails for San Francisco and
San Pedro tomorrow afternoon, the
steamer Rose City, Captain Mason, will
have a well filled cabin list and a full
cargo of freight
District Forecaster' B. A. Beals pre
dicts that the river here will fall slow
ly tomorrow and rapidly Monday and
Tuesday. The highest point reached
by the Willamette during the present
freshet was 15.5 feet. It was at a
stage of 14.8 feet at 8 o'clock this morn
ing, having fallen 0.6 feet since 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
