Sad as it Is to say so. most people don't know enough to go to the moving picture shows. . They frequently contain a leav enlne of matter that is instructive n not elevating. Those that were shown to the audience at the HeiHg last night by B. B. Dobbs depicting Alaska in a manner ' that is truly remarkable, were both, to say nothing of being In the highest degree entertaining. The malorlty of the good-swea auai- ence that saw . fhS pictures last night were members of the Alaska club and their friends, people for the most part who know Alaska as It is and wno were competent Judges of the work of the camera. .Thela aprpoval was com plete. Clemens Organizes West Siders to .Capture the Speakership. A western Oregon legislative squad that will standf fast - In electing speaker and throw dust in the eyes of the eastern Oregon bunch, historically known as the "eastern Oregon steam roller." is the dream of W.' J. Clemens, who leads the supporters of Alien IL Eaton for the speakership. Friends of other candidates say that Clemens has been making unusual ef fort for the Eugene candidate the last day r or two., ; He has been making i point ' to impress upon wavering mem' bers that the speakership is settled, ai ready and that they should lose no time In climbing on the band wagon. Another of his chief arguments, these reports say. Is the formation of a west era Oregon flying wedge that will take the legislative Wheel and guide it throughout the session. This idea hinges on the election of Eaton and the continuous operation of the machine by his supporters afterward, . s , ' Friends of. other candidates laugh at the Clemens idea. . They say they are not afraid of being run over by an east era Oregon. "Bteam roller," should such a thing appear,' and they refuse to be driven Into the Eaton camp by this talk. They likewise ridicule the claim of the Eaton manager to the necessary votes to elect . . ' Instead of the 88 or 84 votes claimed for Eaton, others see only 15 or 1, and some of these, they say, will have to come from withdrawals of minor can' dldates. .The partisans of Jerry Rusk of Wallowa assert he will lead Eaton on the first ..ballot claiming he will be able to muster ZQ votes at the least Some of ; the : country - standpatters are talking favorably of , W. Lair Thompson of Lake .county, who man aged Bowerman's campaign for gov ernor in the earlier stages. Thompson arrived in the city today and began to mix with the politicians around the Im penal boteL ' Henry McKlnney, the Baker county candidate, strenuously denies a report that he is about to withdraw In Eaton' favor. He says he is in to stay, and win not quit for Eaton or anyone else. New Year's Week End at Clat sop Beach. Hotels at Seaside, and Gearhart are open all year.
