is centered over the St. Lawrence val

Relieving the testimony of Mrs. Stella
Atherton against the denials of George
Walling, a well known real estate man,
as to money she says she lent him
when he was "broke" about six years
ago, a 'Jury in the circuit coart last
night gave her a Verdict for 848S.38.
Tbls Is the full amount she sued for,
being $350 and Interest The ease was
tried In Judge Hamilton's department
Mucn or the testimony which came
out In a former .trial in Judge Mor
row's ' department' was ruled eat b
judge Hamilton, who would not allow
Mrs. Atherton to tell much of the cir
cumstances of her friendship with
Walling, and would not allow Wslllng's
attorney to go Into her history.
The claimant was denounced by
walling as an adventuress. He ad
mltted knowing her in Portland hi days
when he was less prosperous, but de
nied that she lent him money or had the
money to loan. He also denied that Mrs.
Atherton gave him money to "eat on"
and bought clothing for him. She said
Walling once gave her a note as evi
denee of the debt but when she gars
It to. him for renewal he kept It and
gave none in -return. -w-- -7,-r--
Mrs. Atherton said she met Walltog
In Missouri. Walling said she did not
letter of recommendation was placed
In evidence in which he testified to her
good qualities and said she worked for
him In a restaurant in Kansas City.
Walling admitted giving the recommen.

circuit court a verdict was returned for
$1157.75 and $150 attorney fees In the
case of J. E. Martin against Frank A.

the case In which hostilities between
the attorneys were narrowly averted
yesterday. Allen R, Joy, appearing for
the defendants, threatened to strike W.

and was fined for contempt of court
