intend to sell previous to the first of
the year have already done so and those
holding back intend to await the spring

There is a slightly stronger tone for

have quit peddling to retailers and this
therefore causes a better demand in the

Northwestern , Fruit ' Exchange ce-

A new situation has appeared lri the
livestock-market .8chwarzohHd St Sul
burger have started to "corner" the sup
plies of fat cattle at interior points.
This is the report
According to advices received here to
day, the big independent, firm , which
has a packing plant here, has had buy
ers all through the interior recently and
all good stuff that could be secured at
the price has been purchased.
The tactics of S. & S. have been
most favorable from the viewpoint of
the cattle raiser. The company has not
only paid the price obtainable for the
same class of stuff as paid at
Portland,' but has actually given these
figures at the Interior feeding grounds.
Just why. the Independents should go
out into the countrv and pajr a higher
figure than the market Is a mystery at
this time. Some attempt to explain it
by . showing that good stuff is really
scarce in- the country and thkt the
company Is really wise is taking hold
of the stock at this time and feeding
it well until needed,1 .,,,--.''
i While most of the purchases of fancy
cattle at high prices by Schwanschild
& Sulzburger have been in the vicinity
of Prinevllle, the company is said to
have operated in other sections,
livestock Karkat Is Slow.
The livestock market started the after
holiday trade by showing a . very slow
tone,. Buying, was limited this mornlntf
and receipts were small.
Four 1 loads of sheep arrived from
Khiinilro a.nl were in verv toor condi
tion, owing to the herd Journey. Accord-1
ins to the shicners. the yards at Bhanlko 1
are in very poor condition at this time
and this together with . the long drive
from Shaniko gave the animals a very
por appearance upon arrival here.
Only one load of hogs arrived over
the holiday. . :
