The French bark Bossuet. now on her
way from Newcastle. N." S. W with a
cargo of coal, has been chartered by the
Northwestern Warehouse company for a
cargo .gf wheat out of here to the United
Kingdom,? and It, is expected that she
will be here for loading about - the" flrat
of the year.l The Norwegian ' steamer
Solvelg . has also , been, "chartered by
Ealfour, Guthrie & Company for a cargo
of wheat from'thls port or Puget sound.
The Bossuet 195 ''tons net register,
Captain Letroquer, is out $0 days to
oay from Newcastle with a cargo of
coal for J. & A, Brown, and should be
due to arrive In the Bay city almost any
day. She is an old trader here and took
out. a cargo of about 120,000 bushels of
wheat and barley from this , port last
,year. Her rate Is said to be J 7s ltd. ;
The tramp Solvelg, 2S2 tons net, Cap
tain Bogh, is now Jn port at Ban Fran
cisco, having arrived there November 17
from Batavia with over 6000 f tons of
sugar. She was taken to load at .Port
land or.Puget sound for St. Vincent for
orders, with the-option of loading bar
ley at Ban Francisco. .
. Although several cargoes of barley
left this port last year, there has been
none shipped so far this season and
shippers say that there Is not much
prospect of any being sent out this year
from this port, as it Is all needed for
home consumption.
It Is expected that the German bark
Selene Will fniah loading at noon to
day with about 80,000 bushels of wheat
for the United Kingdom and she will
probably leave down tomorrow or Wed
nesday. She Is under charter to A.
Berg.

Breakwater Has to Peel Way" Fp
Coast From Yaqulna.
Thick weather and a strong southeast
gale made tt necessary for the steamer
Breakwater, which arrived from Coos
Bay at 8:30 this morning, to oome up
the coast from Yaqulna to tha Columbia
river lightship by means of the lead,
which iwai used constantly. Captain
Macgenn says,, however, that the bar
was comparatively smooth when the
eteamep crossed" in, 11 . ',
- "There Is no Question In my 'mlnd,H
said Captain Macgemv "but that when
the jetty has been extended out as far
as-No. 8 buoy, thera will be 80 feet Of
water on the bar." -
He said that the appearance of the
bar when the Breakwater -passed In at
about 9 o'clock yesterday . morning,
showed that (the Jetty was causing the
channel to deepen all the time. He said"
that between the lightship and tha bar
It was breaking heavily, and one-sea
went aboard the steamer, the, water run
ning Into his cabin, but as soon as the
bar was reached a great change was
noted In the force of the breakers, which
were not as heavy as out nearer the
lightship. . ! V-
When the Braakwater came In yester
day morning tho steamers Rosecrans
and Geo. W. Elder were lying Outside.
The latter came in this morning. The.
Breakwater discharged 800 tons of sal;
mon at Astoria and brought 150 tons
of coal and 80 'tons of general freight
here. She also had 90 passengers.

river yesterday, the steamers : Barah
Dixon and M. F. Henderson were unable
to tow- some rafts which wera to ba
brought up from tha Cowllts river. The

steamers to move the rafts and they
were compelled to give "up the Job for
the day. Four of six rafts in the Cow
litz, which" were to be towed out by
the boats of the Willamette and Colom
bia River Towing company, broke loose
during tba, gala yesterday, ; but were
caught by the boom farther down the
river and did not gat Into the Columbia,

The caee of David Weetman. charged

cousin, Carrie Bledsoe, and with having

for the defense, asked for the postpone

to send for witnesses. He asked the

defendant as an excuse for not getting
the witnesses at his own expense.
Attorney Long told the court that
