Norwegian Steamer Eir in Port
Again for Fir After Three
Months' Absence; Masunda
Takes Wheat.
With the arrival this morning' of the
Norwegian steamer Eir. Captain' Mar-
cussen. and the British steamer Ma
sunda, Captain Burns, both the lumber
' and grain fleets In port were materially
Increased. The Eir arrived at the North
Pacific Mills, where She will load lum
ber .for v. Australia and 'the Masunda
reached the dock of the Eastern A West
ern mills, where she will be lined for
! wheat
This is the second trip of the' Eir to
this port, in the last year. She cleared
from here on July for China, with a
cargo of, 1250,000' feet of lumber and
: after discharging1 proceeded to Otaru
,nd Muroran where sheloaded 72,000
, hardwood ties." for Redondo. . She was
recently taken" on time charter by the
American Trading company, at the rate
of 8S5 pounds a month; to carry lumber
to Sydney, She 'will work a part of
t her cargo at the North pacific mills and
' the remainder at the Portland Lumber
company's mills above the bridges. She
'.will probably take out in the neighbor
hood of 3,600,000 , feet. ' r
: The Masunda, a vessel of S198 tons
net. will probably proceed to Montgom
ary dock No. 2, after being lined at
the Eastern A "Western mills, where
she will take on a cargo about 270,000
,' bushels- of wheat She arrived at As-
, torla yesterday ; afternoon from Hon
olulu, coralpgr by way of Nanalmo,
whera she took bunker coal She was
: 10 days' In making the passage from
the Hawaiian Islands to the Sound port
Her cargo to Honolulu consisted of coal
from Newport News for the government,
and she made the voyage around through
the Straits of Magellan in 72 days. She
. is under charter to Kerr, 'Qlff ord & Co;
Having, finished her cargo of wheat
: the British ship GlenaJvon, Captain
King, was moved to the stream this
morning by the steamer Cascades and
she will be ready to leave down for
the sea as soon as her crew la aboard.
She will probably dear this afternoon
with more than 322,000 bushels , of
..wheat for the United Kingdom, the car
go being dispatched by Kerr, Gifford

After having been laid up In Young
bay for 21 days, the schooner Alvena
has been chartered for a cargo of lum
ber from the Columbia river to San
Pedrb, and. In company with the schoon
er King Cyrus, whloh arrived yesterday
from San Pedro, is now on tha way up
the ylver to load at the St Helens mills.
v The two schooners , will probably get
away at about the same time, and, aa
their destination is the same, aa exciting
race between tho two droghers Is looked
for The crew of the Alvena has al
ready been signed, and she will be ready
to go to sea as soon as she has loaded
, 875,000 feet of lumber. The King Cyrus
will take out 960,000 feet- -
The Port of Portland towboat Ockla-
, noma- arrived up-at-the-Nerth- Bank
dock last night with the schooner Vir
ginia In tow, the latter being laden with
400 tons of hay. The towboat then pro
ceeded down the river for the two
schooners, and as soon as they are left
at St Helens, she will return to Astoria
for tho Kirkcudbrightshire or the Thiers
On her way down she will stop at
Westport for the barkentlna Makewell
which has loaded 1,100,000 feet of lum
ber for Australia, being under chapter
to Hind, Rolph & Co. Her ersw Is
ready to go aboard. ,.
NEW CAMP ESTABLISHED

line; of the Dalles-Celllo canal, and 200
men are now at- work, as well as a
steam shovel, according to Assistant
Engineer F, C Schubert who returned
from there last night Mr. Schubert
says that the electric light plant at
Big Eddy will be completed shortly and.

ing with the aid of Mllburn gas lamps.

before a Jury. His charges would have
opened anew the whole Plnchot-Ballln-
ger - hearing. Charges - which were
brought against the secretary of the
Interior by . Louis R. Glavis were made
as the result of an Investigation Into
AUska coal land entries by Mr. Jones
in 1807. He was called aa a, witness
before the committee. His testimony
and that Of Mr. Glavis damaged Bal

Shortly after the : hearing, knowing
he had Incurred the deep displeasure of
the secretary of the Interior, Mr. Jones
filed his resignation as special agent
in which capacity he had served for
seven years. Balllnger ef used to ac
cept the resignation and ordered Mr.
Jones' dismissal. The special agent
was not given opportunity to seek rein
statement under the rules of the civil
service commission. ... ...
Application Held Up. : -
Coming to Portland to practice law,
Mr- Jones was . admitted to practice tn
the state courts, the United States
courts and the United States supreme
court" He applied to be admitted to
practice in the department of interior
and its bureaus, including the general
land office and Indian office. Other
applications were acted upon promptly.
William K. West made application May
23, 1810, and was admitted, the next
day, and H. H, Schwartz, former chief
of the field division, i got In almost ss
quickly, but Mr. Jones' application was
held up. He ascribed the delay to an
effort on the part of Balllnger to keep
him from practice In the department

said to have been found tn the two dis
tricts It was found necessary to re
enumerate and these losses are Stated

show that Portland lies mora, than the
221,000; population' Originally axpeoted.
