All Elements of Crime Play Part
in Fitch's Poduction at
New Heilig.
' By E. I. '
Tlrpocriiy, blackmail. dishonesty,
theft, de&ont-yacy and murder soch are
i..e lnsredleni ct Clyde Fitch's latest
mid greatest play, ''The City." Charted
with .sensationalism, ghastly wits hor;
. rots, the bruul and bruising climaxes
utasgvred the big audience and left H
fjhclc4tl and stupefied. During the ten
firm of the troniffndous second act, the
audience held Its breath rasping , and
tmothering with emotions.
It is not police nor a cheerful story.
Hut truth, they say, is never well-bred,
and being naked Is shameless. The
central figure la a degenerate youth
mnddened by drugs, an Illegitimate off
spring -of the most eminent cltlien of
: Mlddleburg, -N. Y., and the village dress-
maKer of spotted reputation. With such
a motif, the play contends that the
city Is not to. . blame because weak
characters go wrong. The city Strips
mf n of their flasks and forma a cruci
ble for their regeneration or Jhelr de
moralisation, according to the stuff of
Which tlwy are made. '
Advantages or Village,
"We can hide our hypocrisy In a
email town. Men grow to old age, never
suspecting their own dishonesty ' and
crooks at heart pass for men of Integ
rity: because they have never been
ti-mpted as the great city tempted
them." i
(Jeorge Rand Sr.,' Is the father of the
drug-craased Hannock,' who continually
bleeps the former for money, not know
Ins the nature of Ms claim. The
senior Rand has a legitimate family,
also, t'pon the death of tha father,
George Rand Jr.. Is told tha truth. The
family moves to New York, Hannock
accompanying them as Hand's secretary.
Rand is up for the nomination of gov
error of New York with brilliant pros
pects for a whirlwind victory. Han
nock's blackmailing comes to the notice
of Rand's campaign manager, and his
dismissal is requested.
In the terrible contest between Rand
and Hannock which follows, It develops
that Hannock has that morning married
his , half -sister, Cicely. Tha Innocent
' girl enters and rather than let her
know the secret, Hannock shows the.
only mark of manhood. In him by si
lencing ner forever.-
Death of Cicely.
The death of Cicely brings the family,
all of whom are mora or less compro
mised In various festers of city life,
to their senses, and the audience is
left- uncertain as to the working out
of their futures. - 1
The best performance was that of
Geoffrey Stein as tha broken, sodden
and brutalized wreck. Hannock. The
character accomplishment was so near
perfection as to bear the uncannlness
of reality. . Mario Majaronl as a sot
and man about town, was excellent; his
portrait was intensely exact. Norman
Hnekett. always a favorite with Port
land audiences, sustained a trying role
with thaiacterlstlc force. Miss Ethel
Martin is a velvet-eyed beauty, who
played the highly-colored sister, admir
ably. Miss Sueanne Wills as Cicely
was wonderfully pretty and petite, but
not -equal to the big scene In the second
act. - v

were heard in the federal court here to
day on the application for a permanent
Injunction to restrain the United Mine
Workers from Interfering with the oper
atton of the mines; of the Enterprise
Mining A Coal company at Prada, Ark.
The differences between the mining
company and the. miners' organization
are of long standing, and have led to
frequent conflicts. In Its application
for an injunction the company alleges
that threats have been made to destroy
the mine and to do bodily harm, to the
nonunion miners now employed there.
