Despite Evidence J. H. Reed
Says He Didn't Impersonate
Secret Service Officer.
"Wearing cynical smile, a budding
mustache, a suit of clerical black and
witlt his hair brushed and plastered
down so that it shone, J. H. Eeed came
Into federal court this morning to plead
not guilty to th charge of Impersonat
ing a secret service officer. On tbe
table before him were spread out the
Imitation secret service star, the nick
eled revolver, the handcuffs, the brass
knuckles and the photographs taken as
he wore the star on the front of tola
coat, all of which had been taken from
hia person by William A. Glover, gen
uine secret service officer. In the lobby
of the Imperial hotel Wednesday night.
There were placed in evidence, .too,
the voucher on the postofflce 'depart
ment which Reed had given B. H. Prior
driver on the automobile stage, for f
rde between Umpqiia and Oakland, Or.
Reed's own confession written for Mr.
Glover, telling how he made the Stage
driver think him a secret' service man
was also in evidence, ajid in the face
of All this accumulation Reed, who. ao
' cording to his own statements, has spent
much of his time communing with na
ture, writing love poems and seeking
Inspiration from the masters of litera
ture, preferred to plead not guilty.
Mr. 2lover, who had bejen assisted

rest, told the story of theapture. H
had read a newspaper story In' which'
Reed told of his plana for marrying
Florence Cooper, daughter of a Calif or--nia
smelter king, whose heart he had
won by successful work on, an Important
case. Mr. Glover had followed up Reed
because he knew there was no man of
any such name in the secret service.
