It is a common snytng these days that
the tveet "lias money to burn" but ehe
is not keeping it at home and husband

A prominent banker of St Joseph, Mo,
GraharnNfi. Laeey, has been Investigat

that the monfy outgo Is enormous. Fol

have discovered that approximately is,
000,000 has gone out of their regions
for the purchase of lands In other states
or outside of this country, whlW 834
banks represent that a heavy amount of
money fias gone from their sections for
the same purpose, but that the aggregate
of It is uncertain; 427 banks report that
a total of fully $16,000,000 has been, ex
pended for automobiles In months com
paratively recent.' ' ,
- These banks are in closest touch with;
the people's money and know pretty well
what is being: done with It and the
probability Is that at least $50,000,000 of
it has of late been put Into automobiles
and outride lands, and has thug been lost
to circulation of. these four states' It
may, be assumed, of course, that In the
case of the land; purchases the buyers
went 'onto'' these lands and took their
families with them another direct loss

wheat will not always bring from $1.10

Excellent as were the speeches made
'and the papers read at the third annual
convention in Niagara Falla. of the Na
tional Good Roads congress, one cannot
help feeling a little discouraged at tho
present necessity for repeating pleas and
arguments that ware unanswerable when
first uttered nd - have ever sinca re
mained so. Nobody" denies that bad
roads are frightfully expensive for. all
who use thenv or. that good road are
worth much more than they cost, and
yet we go on year af fer year doing noth;
lng at all for the improvement of most
of our highways, and when wedo build
a stretch of road worthy of the name,
In about nine canes out of 10 we allow
it to go promptly to ruin for want of
the constant -repairing which even the
best Of roads requlre. 'f-V:.-, --
