ture at the courthouse last night on
"How to Find th Law and the Use of
Ijiw Books." . The lecture was attended
by a number of practicing attorneys,
' ' together with nearly, 100 students .of
the University of Oregon law school.
Professor Cooley-will lecture again to-
night and tomorrow night on the same
. subject Professor Cooley will go from
. Portland to the University Of Washing
ton, where he will lecture oefor. the
law classes of that institution.. During
the past year, as head of the system of
teaching inaugurated by the'..Amerlcan
.Law ' 8chool Review.'. Professor. Cooley
has lectured before-SO of the leading
. educational Institutions of the nation.

: Is planning to issue a call to manage
. menu of the various . district . fairs
throughout Oregon so as-to prepare a
schedule f ori next year ; and thereby
avoid conflicting dates, Mr. Lazelle
-called on Manager C. C. Chapman, of
i the Commercial club, yesterday to take
the matter up. . This year the Oresham,
Pendleton and Canby fairs conflict In
that they fall on the same dates, Bep-
' tember 29 to Ootober 1, Inclusive. 'The
state fairs have an association, the
Btate Fair Circuit, so. it is considered
very likely that the district fairs wlU
form an organisation and work In har-
. mony with the State Fair association.
Daughter Seeking rather W. H. Fobs,
7T years old. left Cottonwood, Cal., for
Portland the 7th day of last May. He
has not been seen or heard of since.

"Hating Day." Yesterday , was the
"haslng . day" of the medical depart
ment of the University of Oregon. The
Sophomores captured the Freshmen,
and, putting above them a printed con
fession, "Ws are a bunch of roughneck
Freshmen," led- the bunoh. variously
costumed, through the streets to a
lion's cage -in one of the old Lewis &
Clark fair buildings. Here the Hon,
which belongs to a show, Was induced
to roar, then the fearing Freshmen
were compelled ; to enter a cage in
which, they ware solemnly assured,
the hungry lion awaited, them. After
various Indignities such as painting ef
the legs and fly paper promenades, had
been visited : upon- the 'blindfolded suf
fererq, the Sophomores led them all
to a banquet

Stolen Horses Beoovered.- Erwln
Teager, a rural mall carrier of Sher
wbod, Or., saw a team of horses on the
street yesterday which h recognized
as a pair which had been stolen from
E. G. Hagey of Sherwood. He traced
them to the livery of Sullivan & Co.,
22 Grand avenue, and then notified the
police. Sullivan told Patrolman. Pres
sey and Murphy that he had bought
the horses Saturday, paying 1125 for
them; Hagey has been notified to come

unway Boys Homesick Emery and
Roy Mulvaney, two runaway boys from
Hood River, were found at the East
Side depot last night by Patrolman J. B,
Strain, awaiting an opportunity to catch
a freight train which would take them
back home. They confessed to a decided
feeling of homesickness and a strong de
sire , to return home; even If the birch
rod and not the traditional calf awaited
them. They were taken toethe city Jail
and their mother notified. She said she
would at once send funds to pay for
their return trip.
lKng Session of Court The United
States circuit court of appeals adjourned
yesterday afternoon after a two days'
session, the longest ever held by that
tribunal in Portland. 'A minor damage
case occupied the time of the court the
latter half of the day. The three Judges
of the court are William W. Morrow of
San Francisco, Ersklne M. Ross of Los
Angeles and William B. Gilbert of Port
land. The first two named left for Cali
fornia' last night, accompanied by Dep
uty Clerk Meredith Sawyer. '
A Dividend of 10 per cent on claims

by the United States circuit court for

To Discuss Mains Need of lmroedl
ate change In the mr-thod of supplying
water to the people of Portland will be
the chief theme of discussion at a meet
ing to be held tonight in the Commercial
club to be attended by Mayor Simon,
members of the water board and the
civic council. The advisability of wait
ing until. next spring to pass upon the
water mains amendment while as yet
no definite provision has been made to
relieve the summer water famine in
southeast Portland will also, be dis
cussed. The meeting promises to con
stitute a" definite 'and valuable expres
sion of publlo opinion in this matter.

Death Claim Settled The death claim
of Louis E. Ranch, administrator of .the
estate- of Ira L. Dewey, against the
West Oregon Lumber company, was or
dered accepted yesterday by county
Judge Cleeton. The claim is for 1260
and is in settlement for all obligations
on the part of the company. Dewey
was killed August 0 wmie trying to
load a car with logs for the lumber

Too Crashed John Gorhara, an at

slipped and his left foot was badly

moved to St Vincent's hospital, and rel

Escaped Prisoner Caught Frank
Booth, an escaped prisoner from The
Dalles, was captured, last night In a
north end rooming house by Police Ser
geant Joseph Klenlln. He is held at the
city jail until the arrival of Sheriff
Christman of The Dalles. Booth and
two other prisoners fought their way out
of the county Jail there four weeks ago.
